2e AD&D and BECMI, too

Speaking as someone who has not run/played AD&D, but has done so for BECMI, which also has descending AC, the only negative of ascending AC to me, is having to convert the AC of monsters and items.

A poorly designed system can be a lot of fun with a good group, while the best designed system will still be awful with a bad group. Optimal is a good group with a good system, but often you can't get everything you want.

I generally prefer 3-4 hours as both GM and player.

Also a great way to have weak monsters part of a dangerous dungeon. They might run when they see the PCs, and they might die in 1 hit. But the dungeon is still challenging because of their traps.
