D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever roll for monster HPs in 5E?

Back when I rolled HP for monsters, I didn't change the XP awards. While you could argue it ends up with individual monsters giving too little or too much XP, it quickly evens out.

Should personality or mental stats exist?

There may be more reasons, but one reason is that the players are in charge of the PCs, and most would likely consider it rude to have the GM take control of them (I can't say I disagree). Another is that clever decision making and puzzle solving is considered fun, because it's a mental...

Should personality or mental stats exist?

The difference is that your character can frequently act as if their intellect is very different from their intelligence score, but can never act as if their strength is different from their strength score. If the character is too weak to move a boulder, it doesn't help that the player is a...

D&D General Hit Points. Did 3.0 Or 3.5 Get it Right?

I recently had a rogue player wanting to assassinate a hobgoblin overseer in a castle before he could escape or raise alarm. She asked if she could just slit his throat and I said "if you deal enough damage to kill him." This was in Pathfinder 2E, so i allowed her to use Stealth as initiative...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever roll for monster HPs in 5E?

Damage rolls provide randomness anyway. Although I suppose stuff like power word: kill could make random hit points more relevant at higher levels.

Should personality or mental stats exist?

My point is that you can have those traits without ability scores for them, though. Similar to how you can play a whiny, brave or impatient character even though you're playing a game without Whining, Courage or Patience stats. This opens up more character options as you are less restricted by...

Should personality or mental stats exist?

That depends on the game, the edition of it, and the method used for generating stats.

D&D General How to move a game forward?

It depends. You don't need to have players meticulously act out everything. If the party enters a town and starts wondering if there's any interesting things to do, instead of having them walk around randomly, you can simply shift the scene to the point where they find out which interesting...

Should personality or mental stats exist?

I've grown to dislike ability scores that indicate personality or the intelligence of PCs, for various reasons. For one, it makes certain personality choices highly punishing for some characters. If you want to play a smart or charismatic fighter, you'll be punished by being less effective at...

Describe your last RPG session in more than 5 words.

Two party members almost walked into the lair of the BBEG of our nearly 2-year long campaign, by themselves, while trying to dodge another NPC. They were creeping down the 20 foot stairs leading down to his lair before turning around at the last minute. They do not know it's his lair, but may...

D&D General Jaquaying the dungeon - a term to avoid

I prefer GM as the game frequently does not take place in a dungeon. But it's always a game. :)

D&D General Jaquaying the dungeon - a term to avoid

Older versions of D&D, such as AD&D, frequently refer to the DM as the "referee", so it's a common term among those who play those older versions.

Dragonlance THE JOURNAL OF KAZ THE MINOTAUR: THE LOST COLONY NOW AVAILABLE IN GLORIOUS POD!

My grandmother once took me to the library near the mall where she lived. That's where I first discovered the Dragonlance Chronicles, which were my first encounter with fantasy novels. I went through them like butter. At my local library I found more books, including several of your novels and...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG talk: Additional Starting Attitudes

I think it's great for when the party encounters a group of monsters somewhere who clearly do not appreciate the party's presence, or are at the very least highly suspicious of them, but aren't necessarily interested in stopping (or even aware of) their efforts. This is a situation that comes up...

    D&D General The longer I play Baldur's Gate 3 ...

If players and GMs wanted to pay full price for the product to play test it, I'm sure WOTC would have more play testers for their adventures :)

    D&D General The longer I play Baldur's Gate 3 ...

Yeah, and way more than other D&D-based CRPGs in general, from the old Gold Box games and all the way up to Solasta. It was quite jarring.
