D&D blog: goblin care only about your axe

Hey, we are not demons, even if we don't agree with you.;)

D&D 5E (2014) How are people currently feeling about 5e?

Not very optimistic. All I've seen is leaning too much towards older editions stuff. But I'll wait for the playtest and see...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Art Column Discussion: May

Way to go Jon!! In a few posts here and on the Wizards forum I said that the most important thing is that D&D art should tell stories and when I found it at nr. 1 in your list it really felt good. By the way, the physicist Jon Schindenger said that the owl bear is in a quantum state, until a...

    Fictional Rogues

Silk from David Edding's Belgariad is another great example, even of he borders a little bit on the assassin side.

    Rule of 3. May 8th

Thanks for answering. The funny thing is that the ranger is a two-weapon user because of Drizzt, but Drizzt's style comes from his training as a drow fighter and doesn't have anything to do with his later training as a ranger. Anyway I feel that the ranger should be better at archery than a...

    Rule of 3. May 8th

Why? I'm just curious about the reasons behind this.

What do you want from the Monster Manual?

Please no. Give me five solid versions I can drop in my encounters without losing too much time. As a DM I don't have time to make monsters the 3.x way. The best way would be to have: 1) A basic monster for each type (orc, goblin, whatever) 2) A general engine to modify monsters either at the...

What do you want from the Monster Manual?

    Basically: - 2ed fluff - 4ed crunch

How often do you read a rulebook through?

Cover to cover once. Then I just look at them when I need. 4e books are the ones I read less after the first time, as the structure is clearer and the rules more consistent and easy to remember. Previous editions were a collection of many different mechanics so it took more time to memorize them.

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

Compare it with a 4e fighter that has 2 at-wills, two encounter powers, two dailies and two utility powers before we start looking into actions like charging and into feats. There's no question about the 4e fighter having more flexibility. Look at Come and Get It. Many people hate that power but...

D&D 5E (2014) Playtesting D&D Next: Reapers, Cantrips, Turnings, Rests...

Judging by the number of X.X edition grognards around you're not alone. We'll do a short playtest as soon as the material comes.

The Ranger: What is his shtick?

And yet it is in 4e. Maybe it's not an archetype in fantasy, so what? It's a D&D class with some distinctive features from the start and it's not a shadowdancer. And actually shadow powers are perfect for an assassin. Mundane assassination is for rogues. The point is that there are many...

The Ranger: What is his shtick?

4e assassin fits in as a class as it has special abilities (teleport from level 1, shadow form, shadow based powers...) . Previous assassins just seem to be rogue variants.

Designers Sould Play Old DOS D&D

Played them all several times and loved them. Even hacked the Pool of Radiance -> Pools of Darkness games to avoid the demihuman level caps.

    The Sky is Not Falling

Actually 4.5 would really be what I'd like to see and even if I liked some stuff from Monte (A Paladin in Hell is still one of my favourite adventures) I hope 5e will be a move forward and not backwards. I played a lot of 2e (more than ten years) and 3e but I don't want to go back.

    Hit Points: Hitting the Wall

If you want to avoid hiting the wall abruptly you may look into the 4e mechanics (i.e. healing surges) and implement a variant where you start with less healing surges than usual and regain an healing surge per fight (or every two fights, you have to find a balancing point). In this way "easy"...

    Armor Class and Defense

It absolutely does. High level D&D characters are like John Wayne in the movies: they can keep fighting with 5 knives sticking in their back, a slit throat and a bulette still chewing one of their legs. :p

To grid or not to grid. New staff blog . April 11

As a player any system would work for me, but as a DM I strongly support grids or other hard coded systems like measuring with a string. The reason is that they relieve me of a big burden: 1) I don't have to remember every single action and position. I'm forgetful, and I often DM when I'm...

Which Kobold feels right to You?

4e kobolds for their ability to shift as a minor that opens a lot of interesting fight opportunities. And I like more lizard (or dragon-like) kobolds than previous version. Actually this is because of the strange link between kobolds and dragons that is engraved in my mind after Dragon Mountain.

    Falling from Great Heights

Plot Armor Plot Armor is an enchantment you can add to any armor, or even to no armor. Plot armor never rusts, cannot be broken apart and repairs itself as soon as you can feed pizza or chips to your Dungeon Master.
