Looking for help building a low level archer bard

Warcaster you take anyway, as it’s other benefits are great. Being able to cast with hands full is the least of its benefits. If you have Booming Blade then of course you take it as you can use Booming Blade for opportunity attacks, which you create with Dissonant Whispers or someone...

Where Are All the Dungeon Masters?

In 3e just going through spell selection for creatures took a lot of time, to the point I just stopped doing it and essentially moved to what is used in 5e now. Stat Blocks for level 10+ were always a page long, combat just bogged down. 4e I liked very much, it was much simpler to DM. However...

Where Are All the Dungeon Masters?

This article explains the success of Gloomhaven, which is more of less D&D with auto-DM. My current DM assignment of DMing for 10-12 year olds has taught me more about DMing then anything else. You can’t stop the game for even 30 seconds, it too much downtime. On the positive ANY reasonable...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

It does. I haven’t read the description in so long I forgot that and have let players cast a 10’ square in any relationship to gravity. I guess they got one over on me.

Looking for help building a low level archer bard

Who else is in your group? What classes? In general a Valor Bard gets you want you want. Half elf are always good Bards, Wood Elf is good also. Human variant gets you a feat, Warcaster solves the problem of casting with things in hands. Mobile wouldn’t be bad either, you can get out of...

Data science investigations into the mechanics of the world's greatest role playing game

That's the general idea. The rock paper scissors unexpected though is what makes games great. As a side note, something that has always worked for years is putting in a trap door/floor behind or to the side of the BBEG fighting position, be a throne or dais or whatever. It never fails that a...

    5e invisibility and Detect Magic

I get what you are saying. However, the way I see passive perception used (always on, so the minute you open the door everyone gets a check, invisibility and silence are no exception as they claim they see something amiss, like cobwebs as described above) very few creatures will ever be able to...

Data science investigations into the mechanics of the world's greatest role playing game

None of them account for environment conditions or traps and hazards that can greatly up the difficulty of encounters, nor that the PC can be encountering them after being worn down by others. There isn't really any way listed on how you should get XP in those situations, or how it all adds up...

Data science investigations into the mechanics of the world's greatest role playing game

The descriptions are poor and the DMG isn’t any better.

One handed weapon its up to proficiency and get same as bonus damage. one handed in two hands its up to proficiency and 1.5x as bonus damage two handed its its up to proficiency and 2x as bonus damage. I also allow one handed weapon users to take it. The second part of the feat doesn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Grease is underrated and most people don't realize you can cast it on walls or ceilings, if knocked prone in these cases the creature would fall, at least that's how I would play it. I have never really liked fire shield, although if you could cast in on someone else it would be a different...

Data science investigations into the mechanics of the world's greatest role playing game

It is and it isn’t. Initiative when you are just going to trade attacks and HP isn’t that important. Initiative to cast a Slow spell before the enemies go and thus increase the damage they take and reduce their damage output is very important. As far as -5/+10 feats they are powerful, however...

Arguments and assumptions against multi classing

This is greatly true and not done enough in general. The DM has access to everything the player era do also, and if laid out before hand it doesn’t cause problems. For example I use the old critical hit rules, a critical hit is max weapon damage plus whatever damage you roll, a critical hit...

    AD&D 1E 1e Followers in a 5e Game - Just for Fun!

I wouldn’t necessarily tie to land, but to fame and having an “operating base”. It could just be building the PCs acquired, or a guild hall like a mercenary company or something. This allows the DM to give out treasure that is coins and gems and the like. Of course it comes with problems.

    AD&D 1E 1e Followers in a 5e Game - Just for Fun!

I am waiting for mine. The idea is sound. It also makes you able to play MORE D&D, if someone can’t make it or you just don’t have enough you can fill in with Henchman.

[Homebrew] In a godless campaign what do you with clerics?

My friend had a high magic campaign setting that he pitched. Magic was everywhere, even peasants could cast create food and water. However there were people who magic could not use magic and magic could not affect. In that setting there wasn’t any gods that would/could grant powers, however...

Arguments and assumptions against multi classing

Correct. However the prevailing theory it seems is that since there is no specific rules to cover clerics or warlocks falling it simply can’t happen under any circumstances and any DM who rules that a PC has failed to uphold their faith or pact is screwing the PC and player completely over...

Arguments and assumptions against multi classing

Correct. It seems that many do not care about 2 at all or very little, a simple sentence of PC origin and development is enough to justify anything. That’s the point I am making

Arguments and assumptions against multi classing

That sounds great and working as intended. If the Paladin blatantly goes against this Oath how would you have the benefactor react? My theory (and it seems I am in a minority) is that the very being that GRANTS you powers has their own motivations for doing so, and if you go against that...
