    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Mastery Feat

One of the problems with Shield Master feat is you can’t directly calculate its effects on DPM for yourself and others provides by the feat. Many people play only mathematically optimized PCs so cant even consider a build with a shield in it as its benefits are subtle, it’s part offense and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Mastery Feat

I find a lot of uses for Shield Master and shoves: 1. Shoving into a hazard, difficult terrain, off a height, or into a spell effect like Spirit Guardians; 2. Cutting their speed in half by knocking them prone, as it costs half speed to stand up for most. 3. If I am in air proning a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Mastery Feat

It’s not that you get to “do” the attack action, it’s that you “took” the attack action. Once you declare that you are taking the attack action, you are locked into it, whether or not you get to complete it. Taking the action allows you to then take a bonus action for Shield Master.

D&D 5E (2014) [GUIDE] My Word Is My Sword: The Paladin Guide

True. Secondly of course GWM is better against low AC enemies AND enemies you can only hit on a 20. Power Attack in all its forms has always been that way. Third, let me lobby for my version of GWM feat. I replace the first part, the -5/+10, allowing players to choose to subtract up to their...

Robert Schwalb releases his version of Warlord

It has a weight to it, 15 lbs. More important, if you don't have one then you are screwed in the amount of treasure and other stuff you can get out. Besides, without one how you are going to have Santa Clause in your campaign? I get what you are saying though, people want 8 Str weaklings with...

    Wizard vs. Sorcerer

Yes they would. The only thing most people saw about Warlock was Hexblade dips for everything else. There are some good invocations in there. The new warlord is good, it has some unique things

    Wizard vs. Sorcerer

I think the Sorcerer needs greater and more varied class features. Some really odd stuff thrown in to make up for limited spells known. Physical changes for example, the Dragonborn feats are generally bad but they would be neat if they were Dragon Sorcerer class features. Spell points just...

    Wizard vs. Sorcerer

I didn’t check but the point is the same. With limited spell selection you wouldn’t take rituals unless you had to. You would ask if anyone else has it covered first, then take it. I have never seen a Sorcerer take detect magic at first level, detect thoughts at 2nd, etc. Sorcerer are built...

    Making a Formal Party Charter

Yes, especially in the days when I was young and D&D was new. Even made the paper look like parchment by pouring tea on it and putting it in oven, that’s what we did before craft stores. The money couldn’t just be divided evenly, that was too easy and it wasn’t that way in the books. It went...

Robert Schwalb releases his version of Warlord

I get criticized for being unfun, old crotchety, etc but using Variant Encumbrance cleans up a lot of the CHR builds. To me the problem is a lot of the CHR builds dump STR but then get medium armor, shield, all their other stuff without any trade off. If you use variant encumbrance then...

Robert Schwalb releases his version of Warlord

I crushed with it my Bravura Warlord in 4e. Off-turn attacks, battlefront shift, free basic melee (or substitutes if your group plans correctly.) I wish I could remember more. With this one your attacks are regular fighter attacks without the benefit of styles, so your damage is less than...

Robert Schwalb releases his version of Warlord

No, I think a Paladin is better and has better defensive abilities and is less party dependent. This version of Warlord is more party dependent as it needs other PCs to have good weapon attacks. Really it needs a party of 5 or more. I will try it out in a bit of an odd party Wizard, Valor...

Robert Schwalb releases his version of Warlord

The limits to the class are subtle but there. I think it would fit better in a campaign like mine (50/50 combat/RP, 4-6 encounters between SR, variant rules, bigger crits, etc.) then what I have seen others describe as their standard (mostly combat, plenty of SR to recharge everything, etc.)...

Robert Schwalb releases his version of Warlord

In this case at level 10 the bad-guy Warlord will be pumping up the initiative and the damage of all allies within 30' attacking with weapons. That makes hordes very relevant.

Robert Schwalb releases his version of Warlord

While that is correct, it really is only a problem with the Hexblade.

Robert Schwalb releases his version of Warlord

It has a bunch of abilities that are carefully worded but are good. A damage bonus at lvl 3 (CHR mod) that applies to weapon attacks if within a certain distance of your aura. Bonus to Initiative. You are right that its pretty good. I don't know how it plays but I think it will be ok. Will...

    Wizard vs. Sorcerer

If the game you play is just combat or mostly combat with several rests, then Sorcerer is probably better. If it’s 50/50 then Wizard is better. This is due to wizards effectively having a more varied spell selection as Sorcerers have to limit their spells to what they will find effective in...

From Bow to Rapier and Shield... how long does it take?

I would let a rogue use fast hands though switch out weapons though on same turn. I haven’t had a player request to use a small shield on their forearm for a +1 AC bonus, but I would.

From Bow to Rapier and Shield... how long does it take?

It would be. The weapon is easy to imagine. Shield though vary by grip, some shields just have a handgrip, some have a forearm strap with a hand grip, some are worn on the forearm with a strap for the neck like most phalanx used shields, etc. I also don’t think people realize the strength it...

Hit dice used in ways other than to bolster hit points

Since I run 4-6 encounters per short rest HD for healing get burned during that rest. That makes Durable feat important. Toughness makes an appearance also, I use the +2 bonus also as a Healing die modifier.
