Is Ranged really better than Melee?

Session 0 is incredibly important. For an example relevant to this thread, if I saw a Shield user who intended to go into Shield Mastery to bash people around and prone them, I probably wouldn't build a ranged user, as ranged attacks against prone creatures are at disadvantage. If, in addition...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E's "Missed Opportunities?"

Did you see the Age of Worms conversion here by Tormyr? It’s good. I am on part 6. Don’t worry about too many magic items early, you will need them and you get less later.

Is Ranged really better than Melee?

[emoji817] However mostly encumbrance is the simple rule or hand-waved entirely. This also applies to vision rules over range. Players will also actually protest if DM uses advanced creatures with Archery Style and Sharpshooter, Stone Giants throwing rocks with both for example.

D&D 5E (2014) What variant rules should I add to my new campaign?

I use glass beads for minions, they have a round side and a flat side, but of 7 different colors. So after a hit I just flip them over. It’s like mook HP from earlier editions.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rating 5e adventures - best for my group?

Tormyr probably doesn’t want to blow his own horn, but try his conversion of Age of Worms. It’s from 3.5 and you need the original Dungeon magazines (available online somewhere....) but it’s all there and it’s all linked episodes.

I use this also, scaling on level. Sometimes a creature can take 2 hits, sometimes 3.

    Tormenting Demons

It depends on the nature of the torture but in general yes. If the torture is endless quotes about doing good things and how the demon should repent, that’s not an inherently evil act but could be torture to that creature. Thumbscrews or the Iron Maiden yes, in all cases. It’s depends on...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's the point of gold?

As a DM I always make sure treasure hordes include deeds, businesses, mines, etc. A VG and free mini adventure is Leomund’s Missing Mansion at DMs guild, the PC get an extra planar mansion. The players who like these things will select them when dividing up treasure.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's the point of gold?

Correct. Been nation building since companion set rules, Fields of Blood, and the new kickstarter by Matthew Colvin.

D&D 5E (2014) What variant rules should I add to my new campaign?

Things I use: Critical hits are max weapons damage plus bonus dice as usual. I don’t want players to get a crit and then roll two 1’s. Same goes for monsters. Yunru rule about ability scores Jump checks are DC= distance in feet. No automatic jumps. Dueling users have option to step up...

Mythological Figures: Conan the Barbarian (5E)

I am more of the opinion he was a warrior who has athletics as a skill and is good at climbing and had stealth as a skill and was good at it. Having athletics and stealth as skills doesn’t make mean you have rogue as a class. In earlier editions when move silently was a skill specific to...

Mythological Figures: Conan the Barbarian (5E)

I have never thought of Conan as a rogue/Thief even though he stole things. I always figured he was a strong-arm thief, he was not a sleight of hand, lock picking, skulking in shadows, second story type. He had companions handle that stuff.

    D&D 5E (2014) halforc paladin level 4 - ASI?

What I find amazing, at every table I have ever played at, is you can suggest players focus fire on a creature and it just doesn’t happen. But if you use, as an example, shield master to prone someone and then say “if you attack this guy that I proned you get advantage” players will leap across...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

My experience is DM do that sometimes. The familiars that can fly away are better for this obviously. However, if the creature spends its turn chasing and attack a familiar that is a good use of 2nd level spell as a form of soft control. In our group recently its been used to prevent...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

It’s clearly a slot tax, it’s so worth it that Bards should take it if no one else has it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Yes that’s true, and worse it’s a specific item, a gem encrusted bowl, so you will have to make it yourself or have it crafted. Still worth it on days you know will be tough. At least you can split is 12 ways, or basically the party of 6 and 6 companions.

Arguments and assumptions against multi classing

Seems to me Luke was the other way, a rogue type skilled). who then went into Paladin. That’s easier.

Arguments and assumptions against multi classing

I have been trying to figure out a paladin/swashbuckler that is plausible. I am a big fan of the old movie Captain Blood, with Errol Flynn. Blood is clearly and honorable man bound by his ethics, so that sounds like an Oath to me. He is made into a swashbuckler through circumstance. I just...

Arguments and assumptions against multi classing

While I would like to see an update of the Deities and Demigods book from years ago I dont think we will. The economics of publishing it probably doesnt work.
