    Story hours everyone should read

I'd agree with all of the Story Hours that have been posted thus far. I believe that I read most of them. On the other hand, if anyone is looking for asian-flavored stories, you might wish to try Emperor Valerian's Celestial Empire, and my own Land of the Crane.

Challenging my high-lvl group (NPCs and monsters; my players shouldn't read this!)

Here's an idea for another potential "bad omen," though I'm not sure it'll work with your cosmology. What if the metaphysical center of spira is where souls originate, and, as the worms start eating it/cutting off its influence, things stop being born (or better yet, everything is stillborn)...

Sagiro's Story Hour Returns (new thread started on 5/18/08)

What has always impressed me about Sagiro is that he manages to be a RBDM in a, well, geologic timeframe. Happy birthday! :D P.S. Capricorns make good DMs, too.

    True20 and Modern Games

Actually, this is a standard option for all Experts in Blue Rose. You can choose one good save and get a +1 bonus to Dodge instead of two good saves. I'd advise against granting exceptions on a path-by-path basis, since they're intended to represent what a typical example of that archetype would...

    True20 and Modern Games

I think we're on the same page on this. You're suggesting a class that has "Special Abilities" which has a low BAB, saves, etc. There's already one class that fills that role called the Adept. If you replace the list of powers with ones more condusive to the setting you wish to play in (non-FX)...

    True20 and Modern Games

As someone else mentioned above, there is a "Special Abilities" class role already: the Adept. If you're playing in a non-FX campaign, I'd see no problem in giving the Adept a number of "modern magic" or abilities. In fact, you'd likely want to keep the mechanics that drive the adepts powers...

    True 20 Combat

It is and it isn't. MnM was the first step toward True20, at least philisophically, but True20 has undergone major changes from the initial MnM rule-set (the inclusion of roles and levels not the least of the changes). From what I've seen about the 2nd edition of MnM, it looks like it's been...

    True 20 Combat

Oddly, there are two types of defense modifiers in True20 as well. You can either use your dodge bonus (dex, role-based dodge bonus) or a parry bonus (str). If you're a strong fighter, it may well make more sense to smack your opponents' attacks out of the way rather than trying to dodge them...

    True 20 Combat

As far as I can tell, flanking doesn't exist in True20, which is why there is a "Surprise Attack" ability and not a "Sneak Attack" ability. The surprise attack depends completely on catching your opponent unaware, and doesn't, in any way, relate to positioning (e.g. flanking and facing). On...

Tiered campaigns - running an evil organization out to take over the world!

I think that'd be just as fun with a group of do-gooders as evil guys. Regardless, I think the benefit of this approach is that it gives everyone the opportunity to feel as though they are directly affecting the development of the world. Hmmm - I might have to try this.

what does a CLW potion taste like in your world?

IMC, cure potions are red and smell and taste of cinnamon. The more potent the potion, the stronger the cinnamon taste. I try to describe other potions consistantly, as well. Cat's Grace - green, smells and tastes like catnip Bull's Strength - brown, smells and tastes like a barn (ick)...

carpedavid's Land of the Crane (Updated 11 May, 2006)

Just to let those of you who are still reading out there (I think there are still a couple of you :) ) know, I've decided to try to adapt the Land of the Crane to the True20 system (published by Green Ronin) in order to submit it for their True20 Setting Search. As a result, updates may be...

    True20 and Modern Games

I think you may be missing the rationale for the three classes as they exist (or, you might just not like it). The three roles are designed to represent the three "roles" that any character might fill in a game: the magic user, the combatant, and the skill user. When you distill *any* game...

    True20 and Modern Games

Actually, I've got about half a dozen settings that are not at all D&D like (a couple of sci-fi settings, a space-swashbuckling setting, and an asian fantasy setting) in development that I could see using True20 for without any trouble. I stll think that dropping the adept role completely...

    True20 and Modern Games

I'll echo Skywalker here, and note that a "Social" class is covered quite adequately by the Expert class. They get the greatest number of skills, so give them Bluff, Diplomacy, Gather Information, Sense Motive (and two others: maybe knowledge or perform), plus starting feats of Fascinate...

carpedavid's Land of the Crane (Updated 11 May, 2006)

Uzumaki Now that Iron DM is over, we return you to our regularly scheduled updates! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Kakeru groaned. Why Nakamura? Why now? For over three hundred years, the Nakamura clan has been the largest producer of jade in all of...

    True20 and Modern Games

One of the settings that I was contemplating submitting for the True20 Setting search was very modern (even future-ish). Ultimately, I considered the concept too limited to be selected, but I still think that True20 can do modern just as well as fantasy.

[IronDM] Iron DM Returns! Winner announced!

I just ignored them, mostly. They neither hurt nor helped anybody's entries. Other judges may have a different take, but that's mine. I guess what's important is that they don't fill in as a substitute for actual "adventure."

[IronDM] Iron DM Returns! Winner announced!

Don't let Wulf fool you - Iron DM judges are extremely hard to bluff. Now that the contest is over, I can give the following analysis and advice: I paid almost no attention to the stat blocks that were included. The only match in which I gave them more than a cursory glance was the last...
