    The Demonomicon of Iggwilv: Graz'zt

I'm absolutely certain that the article is fantastic -- as were all the print installments of Demonomicon -- but alas! I am now one of the many who seem to be inexplicably locked out from D&D Insider. More's the pity, since this was probably would have been the article to really sell me on...

    WHITE DWARF Magazine monster index

Thanks for the kind words! I just uploaded the conversion of the birch spirit: http://home.gwi.net/~rdorman/frilond/rul/dm/birchspirit.htm

So what 3E adventures were worst?

World's Largest Dungeon for me. I ordered it based on the positive comments of some Enworld enthusiasts -- as well as a review by Monte Cook. I wouldn't say it was horrible, but it was easily the biggest disappointment among the adventures I bought.

    WHITE DWARF Magazine monster index

Echohawk, Thanks to your help, I've posted a conversion of the death snake from issue 4 to my site: http://home.gwi.net/~rdorman/frilond/rul/dm/deathsnake.html

    Gygaxian Monsters

This is a great thread -- I love reading these History of the Game origins. As a slight tangent, I would suggest that the original illustrators of these monsters could almost be considered co-creators. The early text descriptions of monsters were generally so brief and in some cases so nebulous...

Kobold Quarterly #2 Arrives (contents listed)

And the second issue is even better . . . actually, it's considerably better. KQ is a really excellent deal, I think.

Give me a competent arguement that WotC is "changing rules for the sake of change"

Now, come on, that's incredibly misleading. Sure, the name was taken from Scottish folklore. And there are "dark elves" scattered all through Scanadanian folklore. But those characters more closely resemble AD&D dwarves. Nothing -- absolutely freaking nothing -- about the AD&D drow comes close...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Pseudo-Undead Gary, Did you develop the pseudo-undead in the MMII? And if so, what was the story behind them?

D&D 4E Is 4E winning you or losing you?

I'm pretty ambivalent and trying hard to keep an open mind. It's nigh impossible to evaluate the tidbits we're getting because there is really no context. None. I understand that Wizards is trying to embrace new communication methods with the blogging, but I have to wonder if in this situation...

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder...any good?

I keep meaning to dash off a review, but in short . . . it's excellent. Not perfect, but considering this was the shakedown cruise for the new line, it's very promising. I honestly wasn't sold completely on the Pathfinder concept, but after getting the first issue I'm ready to become a...

    New Design: Wizards...

The draft article suggested a very radical mechanical break from past editions. Since we really can't put these changes into any useful context, I was happy to put this info into a "need to wait and see" category. It could all turn out great or horrible, but the glimpse we got at least had some...

    WotC Blogs II

I'm dead serious. I take it you aren't familiar with the Elements of Style? At 80 pages or so, it should be standard issue for anyone who has to write for a living. And doing a company blog certainly seems like it would qualify.

Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk - got it!

I had no memory of Sir Bluto from the first edition version, but the 3.5 version had a great hook in his stat block (I can't remember what it was, only that it made the NPC really come alive for the players). And his feint + sneak attack combo was nasty.

He sure was. And what a great way to bring him back.

    WotC Blogs II

I understand it's a blog, but that is one terribly written entry -- I don't mean the sentiment, I mean the mechanics of the writing. Someone get the new guy a copy of Strunk and White.

perception of OD&D/AD&D as random deathtraps

I'm not sure if you're really writing to me here or to someone else in this thread, but in my mind a statement like "1e [game play] is all over the map" easily includes the experience of all those people who, in fact, try diligently to play the game as written. But here's the trick: I've never...

perception of OD&D/AD&D as random deathtraps

And we have BINGO! This is the single biggest thing that drives me crazy about all the various edition wars threads -- 1e play varied so much from table to table that it is nearly impossible to compare or contrast it to any other edition. The discussion all-too-often devolves into a useless he...

    Calling all Graz'zt scholars!

I'm pretty sure you would get a huge kick out of Empire of the East -- the battle scenes and integration of magic come very close to D&D. The influence is unmistakable.

    Calling all Graz'zt scholars!

Yeah, I'd really like to see if anyone else thinks that the Zapranoth connection has merit.
