Can Sharpshooter be used with a Net?

I'm sure at least part of it can. I wouldn't allow the -5/+10 to work, but the no penalty for long range should be fine.

D&D General I Do Declare! Do you? (POLL)

I used to have my players declare actions when the declared actions affected their place in the initiative order. However, that become a little too cumbersome and was abandoned at my table.

    Barbarian Archetype: Wild Soul [PEACH]

Hmm. That's fair. Against a single PC I could easily see it being just that. I mean, a paladin of second level or higher could heal it away (once every two levels), as could a Life Cleric using Channel Divinity: Preserve Life. A Cure Wounds spell can heal the injury (about 25% of the time at...

    Barbarian Archetype: Wild Soul [PEACH]

In addition to just being different from the Battlemaster, I specifically wanted something that starts each fight with no resources and has to earn them as they go. I went with a lower die value specifically because I knew the dice would accumulate quickly. However, I feel like Satyrn had a...

    Barbarian Archetype: Wild Soul [PEACH]

I'm open to changing how fast you gain them. I've also toyed with the idea that you lose one each time you get hit by an enemy (as the hit disrupts your momentum). But, I feel like doing that would require tuning up the value of the dice. I will also point out that the momentum dice start as...

    Barbarian Archetype: Wild Soul [PEACH]

I've created a new barbarian archetype for my home game, and I was curious what the community reaction might be. Any constructive comments, concerns or criticisms are more than welcome. Edit: looks like this might be the final revision, so I've thrown in some flavor text. Sorry about the...

WotC Considering NPC Stat Format Change

I always enjoyed the AD&D 2e Planescape statblocks. They do seem a bit arcane on first glance, but once you get used to them they have a wealth of information at a glance.

D&D 5E (2014) Kenku - Poorly thought out race no matter how cool

It's difficult to play a non-speaking character, especially a caster. I recall playing a magic user in AD&D 2e whose tongue had been cut out before she was banished for being a "witch." It was exceedingly difficult for her to communicate with the rest of the party in any meaningful way in any...

D&D Art & Arcana Amazon Sale

Thanks for the heads up. At the regular price it was too expensive to fit into my budget. The sale price however, was just in the sweet spot.

Why do people still play older editions of D&D? Are they superior to the current one?

There's no real reason why anyone can't try anything. However, the person who invested in gaining the feat (or power) should generally do it easier, faster, better or at less of a cost than those who haven't.

Why do people still play older editions of D&D? Are they superior to the current one?

The 2e psionics rules are my favorite D&D psionics rules.

Why do people still play older editions of D&D? Are they superior to the current one?

Every edition of D&D has it's own quirks and features that changes the feel of the game; it's part of why people develop favorite editions. For some people, being able to perform cantrips all day long makes magic feel less magical. For others, it makes sense to them if their wizard can always...

Do you want Greyhawk updated to 5e?

I have no interest in Greyhawk, so no, I don't really want to see it updated to 5e. That said, while I would prefer other settings ahead of Greyhawk (Spelljammer, Planescape, etc.) I see no good reason to deny fans of Greyhawk an update to a setting they love. So, no . . . and yes.

    Why the hate for complexity?

Complexity is fine, as long as the complexity serves the purpose of enhancing the enjoyment of those playing the game (including the DM). When complexity is frustrating to implement or track, or when the effort it takes to implement the complexity provides little to no benefit to the gaming...

What Systems Have You Had Long Term Campaigns With?

Systems I've run or played long campaigns in: AD&D 2e D&D 3e/3.5e D&D 4e D&D 5e Palladium BtVS Vampire Systems I've bought but never run or played: The Battletech RPG (I love Battletech, but I seriously hate that system. I found a way to use the Battletech RPG's RPG skill to Minitaures game...

What is your way for doing Initiative?

I use 2d10 + 1/2 of Dex modifier + any other relevant bonuses. I find the 2d10 evens out the extreme highs and lows of the d20, and using half the Dex mod makes Dex less important.

Do you let Eldritch Knight or Clerics cast while using a (real) shield?

I might ask after the point of no return. However, if the answer was that they didn't bring any, I'd tell them to mark off an appropriate amount of gold for winter clothing, and then keep going.

Do you let Eldritch Knight or Clerics cast while using a (real) shield?

Doesn't RAW also let you adjust how you're holding a weapon so that you're holding it but not wielding it? Presumably, instead of dropping the weapon, the character could tuck a weapon under her other arm while casting. That's one of the narratives I use for such things. I also let flashier...

Preferences regarding "save to resist" vs. "roll to hit" mechanics?

I like the dumb-luck/random-chance being present as well. I think it's just a matter of preference as to the frequency at which chance can override skill. For instance, there's a lot of chance represented on a d20. Dropping it to a d12 or a d10 (depending on the bonus structure of the game in...
