Options by default: on or off?

When I start to DM a new campaign, I produce a house rules document to the players which states what I will and won't allow (and what I will allow with changes). Beyond that players must ask me for approval (it's only polite). I try to allow as many options as possible unless I have a serious...

Northern VA/DC based group seeking Eberron players

Hi, I'd like to add my post to the list of those games in DC, MD, Northern VA seeking players. My group has lost several members to "going on with life" one might say. We used to have about 8 players, now we number just four plus DM and we'd like to add some new blood. We play pretty much...

Thank you very much. That is exactly what I wanted to know. Tzarevich

    Old Modules

Hopefully someone out there knows the answer to this question. How do the modules "The Village of Hommlet", "The Forgotten Temple of Tharzidun" and "The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth" relate to the original "Temple of Elemental Evil" adventure? Are they separete adventures or are they included in...

    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

I have played quite a few creatues with ECL and in answer to your question about whether or not the ECL is worth it, the answer is that it depends on what race and what classes you are using. I have played in a number of high-level campaigns to date where Level adjudtment races have ruled the...

Game Stores in Silver Spring, MD?

I think you are referring to Barbarian Books. They no longer carry gaming stuff as of last I heard. Deam Wizards is the largest game store I am aware of in the Maryland suburbs. Tzarevitch

Northern VA - Fantasy or Modern - Player - hoping to join

We split time between Alexandria and DC if you are interested and willing to drive that far. We play d20 (3.5) Eberron and Al-Qadim on alternating Saturdays @2PM to 11PM or so with a break for dinner. We range in ages from 27-34. We use mats and minis pretty regularly but we do role play. Our...

For the first time ever, I've banned a player class from my table

Thanks. The infusion is rather powerful but I still argue that the problem comes from the feat not the class. The artificer's ability to metamagic items is intended to allow them to try to keep pace with arcane spellcasters by burning through magic items. The problem comes when the feat allows...

For the first time ever, I've banned a player class from my table

By the way, can someone please post the exact text of that infusion so that we all know what we are arguing about? I don't have my Eberron book here with me. Tzarevitch

For the first time ever, I've banned a player class from my table

I think he said the wand was cast at 9th level and she was using a feat to boost it up to 11th level (I can't remember the name of the feat). Tzarevitch

For the first time ever, I've banned a player class from my table

Metamagic rods do not increase the spell level. A sorcerer with the empower spell feat and a twin-spell metamagic rod can do the same thing 3x/day, and the rod doesn't expire. The problem is with the feat not the class. Also, I do not think that the artificer can use his ability to apply a...

For the first time ever, I've banned a player class from my table

No offense intended, but I don't understand how you are planning to ban something the player did when you don't even really understand what it was that she did. Shouldn't you read up on the rules she was using first and make sure she did whatever she did correctly before you allege that there is...

How will guns change a D&D world?

Honestly, guns don't really cause all that much of a change to the game. All they really amount to is a smaller, faster-firing crossbow, with much greater ammo capacity. Low strength characters who would use crossbows tend to use guns instead. High strength characters still use bows because they...

    Changing firearms to martial weapons

I guarantee if you are so much as holding a weapon on a battlefield, much less loading one, you'll draw fire. Besides, they weren't miming. They were attempting to load the weapon and shoot before someone shot them first. In the chaos of combat however, they couldn't remember the steps needed to...

    Changing firearms to martial weapons

Actually that is not quite true. Modern metal-cartridge ammo weapons ARE simple to use. Basically you load the shell and fire (with slight variations depending on the weapon). Percussion-cap and earlier weapons are actually quite hard to use. It is easy to fire them but they are extremely hard...

    Changing firearms to martial weapons

I made most firearms simple weapons (rifles, shotguns, revolvers etc.). Machine guns and other autofire weapons remained exotic weapons. Tzarevitch

    Changing firearms to martial weapons

Nor did I. I ran a Planescape game for over a year with WWI-level firearms. They tended to render crossbows obsolete except for stealth assassination but with the high-strength set bows beat out firearms almost any day. I even allowed primative machine guns and grenade launchers and they didn't...

    House Rules

I mainly house-rule select spells and magic items. Teleport: I use the rules from Monte Cooke's Arcana Unearthed and I shortened the range. Greater Teleport: Same as Teleport but with greater range and carrying capacity (no unlimited range and 0 chance of error nonsense). Dimension Door...

using props to track initiative - an idea

I use Microsoft Excel. It allows me to move characters around when they change order through delaying and readying and also allows me to quickly track and total damage to NPCs. I use spare space next to the initiative count to list special effects (penalties, enviornmental effects etc). Tzarevitch

    Phaerlin Giant CR?

I'd noticed that one too. The CR is a bit low. It should be at least 5. It is certainly more powerful than an oger but I disagree that it is more powerful than a troll. If you are really interested in a CR that makes no sense, look at the Ibrandlin in the same book. It is a 10HD dragon with...
