'I go to Krumptown and meet Sludge and he's fine and we have a beer' is quite the action declaration, no? It seems to skip over quite a few steps. Wouldn't you normally just start with 'I go to Krumptown?'

The place that was Krumpton is still there, it's just the town has been burned down, right? So the character travels there and finds the wreckage. Where is Sludge? Did he die, is he hiding, did he escape? That's surely to be established.

WotC WotC (Mistakenly) Issues DMCA Takedown Against Baldur's Gate-themed Stardew Valley Mod

Funny how all their 'lil mistakes' involve threatening legal action or pulling the rug out from under other publishers for potential financial gain, waiting to see if there's a backlash, and then if there is going 'whoops sorry'. The mistakes I make every day are about forgetting to do some...

I think the negation is more along the lines of 'this character can't be persuaded to confess'. Logistical things like 'the X is at Y' aren't negations in the same way. I guess you could over-use it, but I don't think anyone is saying the X must teleport to z just because someone is looking for...

Yeah, I think it has that coding to us but it's not emphasised in the modern game texts and I don't think it's a big part of the cultural coding for people coming into the hobby fresh.

It's that strange interstitial period where people wanted RPGs to be like stories, but the game design technology wasn't really there so it had to come from outside the rules. Or against them.

I'm not quite sure I've understood some of the 'mystery' part of this thread, and personally I have a pre-determined answer to such things even when I play Other Worlds, but: As I understand it, in the games that don't have a pre-determined answer, it's not that the players are creating the...

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

Macbeth wasn't a tragedy because he succeeded in becoming the king?

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

I'd say so. Edited to add: The character succeeded at their mission, but lost their soul and place in the world in the process. That seems a pretty clear cut tragedy to me.

I mean I'm thinking of people who are new to roleplaying altogether. What would tip them off that this wasn't acceptable?

So, in D&D (any edition), is a player prohibited from saying this? What about if it's in their background? Are they prohibited from saying they grew up with a friend called Bob who lived in a town called Madeupplace? I agree that having/not having an explicit rule like this is a significant...

I haven't played Torchbearer either but I'm not sure your characterisation of it is correct. I think lots of people come into D&D and think that 'I go into town and find my sister at the tavern where she works" would be a reasonable thing to do. Also 'my character previously went to X place and...

Which games allow you to do that, and which games don't?

I mean, this is just 'I know it when I see it'. I don't know what 'players are in a position to make changes to the game in actual play outside of their own PCs actions or knowledge' means. Which games have that and which games don't? If a D&D player invents the name of the inn they were in last...

OK, what would you add to the GM's notes sentence to incorporate these elements? Or is there a second, separate descriptor that applies here? It's not clear to me which RPGs wouldn't have the elements you describe though.

Thanks. Yes, 'the sanctity of the GM's notes, and whoa are they detailed' is a genuinely useful tool for creating certain kinds of play, and when done well it can be very enjoyable. I never know what people mean when they say 'narrative games'. It seems almost the opposite of the GM's notes...

With respect I think there's an element of trying to preserve the mystery of the stage magician's techniques in your position here. 'Don't peek behind the curtain'. Yes the 'play to find out the contents of the GM's notes' description is very reductive. Yes it leaves out a lot of the depth and...
