D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Story Now isn't about creating a result to be enjoyed later. It's about experiencing the story in the moment, as it's created, and being part of that creation not an audience member to it.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

To be fair it doesn't always need to be mechanical. If the encounter is to defend the PCs' village or fight off an assassination attempt on the king (etc), if the PCs are defeated then presumably the village is destroyed, the king is killed, etc.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

[whispers a secret] I don't think 5e is very good.

Optional Rules Adjustment: Theme Music If the theme music is not playing, player characters and level boss type NPCs reduced to 0 HP are not killed. Instead they are knocked out, captured, incapacitated, disarmed, or escape. Inspiration cannot be used. Abilities that reset on a long rest cannot...

"I lost my hand and my magic sword, my friend has been captured by bad people, I didn't complete my magical training because there was no time, the cause I believe in has taken a big knockback and morale is down, and I have to spend the next few weeks recovering from my injuries while the bad...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Would you ever cut off and eat your own limbs? What, not even if you were trapped under a boulder with no food or help, miles from anywhere? Hah, gotcha! Therefore all autocannibalism is fine, we disagree only on the trivial question of frequency. In this TED talk I will

How have I changed any goalposts? I'm pointing out the artificiality of the examples (or the hollowness of your games I guess).

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

A player is a jerk for trying to do something when they have no reasonably held belief that it fits with the established fiction. A GM is a jerk for rejecting reasonably initiated attempts by non-jerk players without very good reasons to do so.

Do they never do it twice, such that someone there might remember them? Or is it always a brand new place full of indifferent strangers every time?

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

If players are unreasonable and invoke the ability without it making any sense then I agree that's jerk behaviour. I don't have any players that would do that. A simple 'OK how do you go about it?' is probably all that's required. I can think immediately of four ways to justify use of the...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Did any players try to do such a thing though? I'm guessing no. The starting point has to be that if you have reasonable players they will try reasonable things.

But the example being put forward is players deliberately making outrageous action declarations that ignore or misrepresent the fictional positioning in the hope that the GM will accede. Not so much in-character playing to win but out-of-character metagame playing to win.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

But there is a difference between the observable fictional positioning that leads up to the action declaration - am I asleep, can they speak my language, have we already established any other potential barriers - and things that are not visible which either come from the GM's notes or are...
