D&D General Reassesing Robert E Howards influence on D&D +

In my view, the Tolkien influence is way greater than Gygax cares to admit (I think he downplays it due the early lawsuit) but D&D character motivations are not Tolkien-esque. Tolkien has a world shaped implictly by a very Catholic morality. D&D takes the Tolkien window-dressing and then stuffs...

    Terrible sequels

For me, terrible sequels have one consistent aspect, regardless of the franchise. Invalidating the first movie. There seems to be a tendency for filmmakers to want to put everything back to how it was at the start of the first movie, which leads to some incredibly lazy writing. Look at...

TSR The Dreams in Gary's Basement

Cheers @Alzrius. For those interested: I think Luke was born around 1970, so I'm assuming we can say that his sisters didn't play much post '77.

TSR The Dreams in Gary's Basement

Oh, you're right, Heidi has reentered the industry after retiring from her job in the jewellery industry, didn't realise that. We know that the very first Gygax session was Gary, Ernie and Elise, so I wonder how much Elise played after that first session. I only suppose it wasn't much because...

D&D General Industry Veteran Jennell Jaquays Passes

Jaquays partner is also trans and I believe a big part of the original Bard's Tale game, so I'd be surprised to have them not recognized as well.

TSR The Dreams in Gary's Basement

Of his children only Ernie, Luke and Alex are really active gamers. Alex is the youngest, and more into video games and Magic. And (as I've previously stated in this thread) Ernie, let's be honest, is a bit flakey. That leaves Luke.

    Your most pointless TV/movie/book nitpicks

Are you surprised that's an event that has absolutely no connection to the novels? It's impressive how the showrunners could completely fail to understand the character (even the actor seems to have had a better understanding) (In that: Stannis is not dead, he has elaborate plans for his...

TSR The Dreams in Gary's Basement

I can't help feeling they would fall out anyway. Don Kaye infamously didn't turn up to Gary's wedding because they'd competed for the same woman (they later made up before D&D was created but the precedent is there).

    Your most pointless TV/movie/book nitpicks

It's a shame most of that series is pretty good. I think it's the only depiction of George III that actually gets close to his likely accent.

Yeah there's no way any of those trades would have been allowed to stand.

    Your most pointless TV/movie/book nitpicks

It was likely also the bad surgery when they attempted to remove it. He survived long enough to return to Aquitaine and die in his mother's arms so it's not like he died on the battlefield either. Most notably it only happened because he forgot to put on his armor (because he was super kewl...

TSR The Dreams in Gary's Basement

Once WoTC brought Gary onside, he got to shape the narrative pretty closely (also here on Enworld due to being an active poster) but you've got to be very careful about taking one person's view as Gospel. For years I remember hearing about how the "Blumes" were the ones who recked TSR and hired...

TSR The Dreams in Gary's Basement

Yeah honestly for me the way Gygax treated Kuntz is a million times worse than Williams keeping trophies (if true). Williams was just a manager - the relationship between Gygax and Kuntz was way closer, and the betrayal all the more biting because of that. I think we can say that D&D honestly...

WotC: 'We made a mistake when we said an image not AI'

The smart guys who wrote the code got paid. The artists whose works were stolen to train the AI didn't. Do you understand the difference? The rest of your argument is "well it's going to happen and its personally convenient for me so why debate it". (And I say this as someone who has used...

WotC: 'We made a mistake when we said an image not AI'

I actually think the photoshop situtation here is silly and an overreaction. An AI-tool in a graphic design program that is not trained on copyrighted data is 100% ok in my mind. No different to someone writing using a grammar/spelling checker or something like AutoCrit/Grammarly.

Who's talking about banning? Make them pay the proper amount for the data they are using without authorization and the problem fixes itself. (ie the market sets the appropriate cost)

WotC: 'We made a mistake when we said an image not AI'

But it's not a good analogy. Most automated work is done because it saves labour, and the machine can do the task without us. But AI-generated art literally cannot function without a training dataset. It is dependent on the creative output of humans which it then mindlessly copies. It's...

WotC: 'We made a mistake when we said an image not AI'

The story isn't about the waves, it's about being honest with your leader even when you think he won't like what you tell him. Regardless, AI-generated art isn't a natural phenomenon.
