    Unconfirmed: More Layoffs at WotC

I shouldn't be shocked by this sort of news anymore.

False dichotomies and other fallacies RPGers use

And my favorite spin on this from days of yore is: Refusal to read or digest clarifications after they have been offered and keep beating the same strawman. Also, not fine.

    Whatever happened to Necromancer Games?

Hmm. It could have been beneficial *at the time* *for a WotC not associated with Hasbro*. IOW, the designers at the time knew that the game benefited from small print run items that it didn't make much sense for them to print themselves. And it might not be economically beneficial for *WotC...

Retcon the dumb "Faction War" and bring back the FULL on Blood War?

Now, now. I suspect you don't think that this fairly characterizes your preferences any more than this... ...fairly characterizes our preferences.

Retcon the dumb "Faction War" and bring back the FULL on Blood War?

I'm with you 99% percent. But there is one bit that I think Ari is spot on about. PS canon did say that mortals were not all that important to fiends. This stands out clearly in my mind because it was one thing that never sat well with me and that I explicitly changed in my campaign. I'm a...

Retcon the dumb "Faction War" and bring back the FULL on Blood War?

The insight about this came from Monte Cook's old blog, and I think he said that they had laid some stuff out for it. But I don't have a link handy.

Retcon the dumb "Faction War" and bring back the FULL on Blood War?

++ liked blood war. But yeah. Faction War was a different issue. I did think the results of Faction War were dumb, and resulting in gutting the best factions. And as PCat said, when originally written, many of the changes weren't meant to be permanent. But after Planar Handbook for 3.5, I...

    Whatever happened to Necromancer Games?

I don't know if they did it hear, but one of the WotC employees put a put a post up on RPGnet saying (basically) "we hear people don't like our adventures, what can we do to be better?" And the answers, even in those Paizo-bahsing halls, was mostly just "take notes from Pathfinder." I guarantee...

    Whatever happened to Necromancer Games?

My contention at the time was (and remains) that you couldn't do it with the framework of the Class/Level system, the use of which was part of the terms for using the D20 logo. So I think calling it absurdly wrong is going a bit far considering it's technically correct. I do agree there is...

Can somebody explain the bias against game balance?

Ridiculously easy, but trivial. But you seem to be responding to a point I'm not making. Balance compromises flexibility, but it does not follow that an unbalanced game is flexible. Making an unbalanced game it trivial. Making a well balanced game is difficult, and desirable. Making a flexible...

    Go Play?

The message really resonated with me for a while when game wars and edition wars were thick in the air.

Can somebody explain the bias against game balance?

I seriously disagree there, to the extent that I am reading "re-design" as "tweak". I'd much rather tweak a game built with flexibility or a toolkit approach in mind than one built for a single play experience. Elsewise it becomes too much effort to build the gaming experience I want.

    Go Play?

Well, I don't know if anyone made a "go play" site, but it all originated here on story games: Story Games - The Secret Language of Cars On RPGnet, I use this icon (let's see if this works):

What are you playing that is NOT D&D?

Fantasy Craft is filling my fantasy gaming needs at the moment. Running my Freeport game via fantasy craft. I run Spycraft for my modern fix. Bits and dashes of Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, and Spirit of the Century. Also digging my first session of Danger Patrol and hope to play it again soon.

Can somebody explain the bias against game balance?

That's one perspective. Some GMs: 1) Get the best results for their groups and themselves by tweaking existing games. 2) Enjoy this activity. Indeed, I wonder if in some new fangled games, the Game Designer is intruding too much into the territory of "running the game remotely" by creating a...

Can somebody explain the bias against game balance?

In our common fantasy game of choice, harsh language can actually be pretty effective. There's a priest in our group built around stress attacks.

Terrific post by Gabe from Penny Arcade

It can be fun, but you have to have a good bead on your players to decide if it's a good idea. IRL, I know people who don't like their peas and potatoes to touch on their plate. In my gaming group, one player wigs out at magic popping up in a modern setting. Both odd, but like family, you gotta...

10 Sourcebooks: Which Ones Should I Get?

Chaositech is great EXCEPT for the construction rules, which make no sense. But unless your players are planning on building them, it may not be a big loss. The Deep is a nice, beefy sourcebook, best of breed for the subject matter. Eldritch Sorcery is nice for old school vets who want some...
