D&D 4E Top Ten Things I've Learned on the 4e Forum

The only complainers are small (but vocal) minorities.

D&D 4E Rich Baker on 4e Realms changes

"Remember?" Is this some kind of known fact somewhere- that the "squawking" is only by a "very small but very vocal minority"? I ask mainly because I so often see this argument used as a defense against complaints, and I'm genuinely curious how people know that this is the case. How do they...

    no more regional feats?

I liked the Regional Feats when I first saw them, but quickly changed my mind. To me, they were basically the same sort of generic cultural handwaving that I dislike in a lot of fantasy fiction (Jordan's Wheel of Time series comes to mind, notably); the notion that, "Well, Nation X is a...

D&D 4E Call a kender a kender? What should 4E "halflings" be called?

I voted Kender, but what about Hin? That's the name that Ed Greenwood came up for them in Gaz8: The Five Shires for Mystara, and which then migrated over to his Forgotten Realms.

    Scalzi on Dragon

One thing to note, though- I don't believe Dragon is soliciting for Fiction at all, which would be standard (they haven't solicited for original fiction in a long time, only having fiction pieces from authors they selected- and presumably worked out terms with). I don't see anything on the...

    Scalzi on Dragon

Add to that, Dragon is (at this point) an online only magazine with no demonstrated track record for circulation rate, nor frankly, even anything resembling a publishing standard (the sole "issue" they've had going forward from this point is very little to judge by). This, compared to print...

Forgotten Realms - What Gods and Languages Does Kara-Tur Have?

There's a lot about Kara-Tur languages in OA6: Ronin's Challenge, available as a free download from Wizards.

Six Blind Men and the Fourth Edition....

While I see your point in re: context, I will say that the notion of Feats and Prestige Classes really was laid out pretty well before we actually saw all of the mechanics behind them- there were a lot of people, as I recall, who were already using them in their games just based on the tidbits...

Six Blind Men and the Fourth Edition....

I think that's all pretty substantive stuff, myself- more than we've currently got. Even considering that some of it changed in the interim. YMMV.

Six Blind Men and the Fourth Edition....

The latter, yes. Dragon and Dungeon suffered during the collapse of TSR, to the point where they were several months behind on releases of issues. I remember eagerly awaiting issue #247 (the one with the Rakasta article by Bruce Heard) but it being delayed several months for financial reasons-...

    New troglodytes

*shrug* Could be, but considering all the many subraces with minimal differences, that's never been much of a problem before. Then again, 4E appears to be splitting at least one race into two (elves), so maybe that's their new M.O. on races and subraces?

    New troglodytes

The word itself actually means "cave dweller", though. And Pan Troglodytes are none other than chimpanzees- which might be mistaken for primitive cave-dwelling men among the more superstitious (and less informed).

    New troglodytes

Why, though? I can't think of any cave dwelling lizards offhand that are stout and muscular. There really doesn't seem to be any reason that they should be, and since that's not how Trogs have been traditionally, this seems like change just for the sake of change, with no real rationale behind it.

    New troglodytes

The Trogs weren't ever burrowers, though, that I recall. They were always just stinky, xenophobic chameleons that lived in caves. Just because you live in caves doesn't mean you have to be able to dig them yourself.

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

That's probably true from the perspective of Hasbro/WotC, but honestly- historically- D&D was created by and for an older gamer market when it came out.

    New troglodytes

Ugh. I was hoping that concept art for the Trog from earlier was just one artist's wonky interpretation of them, and not the standard. These things just look horrible.

    Zombies!!! Anyone played it?

I think he's probably referring to "Last Night on Earth" and not Zombies!!!. I did find this listing for it at Boardgamegeek, though, so I'm sure there are copies of LNoE available out there somewhere.

    Naming Fourth Edition

How about just using the old names and concepts that have been well established in D&D lore rather than creating new ones? Spirit Plane, probably. Dragonkin- but I wouldn't have them be humanoids, in all likelihood. Limbo, if you're only using one plane. Fey or faeries.

    Zombies!!! Anyone played it?

I saw the Zombies!!! board game by Twilight Creations in a game store in Berkeley over the weekend, and thought it looked cool. Has anyone out there played this? Good, bad, fun, unfun? Stories they can share? (Mods: If this thread would be better off in another forum- it's not strictly an RPG-...
