What are you reading in 2025?

The Sword Defiant by Gareth Hanrahan. I'm impressed. A classic-feeling fantasy that is well written and just good fun. Basic premise, going off something he said in some interview, is 20 years after a LotR type conflict, but if the One Ring had been used to defeat Sauron, and Mordor inhabited...

D&D General If I had the D&D/WotC Worldbuider job, I would... (+ thread)

I'd create either a book, or set of small books, that are one-part world-building tutorial, one-part world example. First book/section would be something akin to Nentir Vale: local region, with guidance on creating locally. Second book/section would be regional, third book/section would be world...

D&D General If I had the D&D/WotC Worldbuider job, I would... (+ thread)

I'd fire the people who oked Worlds & Realms, then re-do it as "micro-settings" with MAPS and proper write-ups, including short treatments of even the most minor settings from D&D canon.

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone Else Find It Interesting How Different The Approaches to Setting Books Is Between 5e & 5.5e?

Haven't read the whole thread, but I think maybe WotC is searching for a way to refresh the IP, and in a forward-thinking way (while they're "ahead" rather than "behind"). I've heard some remark that "D&D" is in need of a bit of a revival, in terms of world/setting/flavor. The core IP is great...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

But obscure words are part of the fun of D&D. I mean, I fondly remember poring over the 1e DMG and encountering hundreds of weird words. It gave everything a sense of mystique. Has anyone ever encountered jacinth outside the context of D&D?

So, what was the deal with Zelazny's second Amber series sucking so badly?

I will second Lord of Light. Amber is OK, but I think Zelazny's best work was before that.

    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

Agreed. I'd add "Ryan Reynolds." He's funny(ish) and talented at what he does, but a little bit goes a long way, and we never get just a little Ryan Reynolds.

    D&D 5E (2024) Where to next, WotC?

I can't remember...I started that chart probably about 10 years ago, so don't know what my reasoning was. Probably should add it, though of course the 2013 stuff is the least necessary for the chart.

    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

Underrated: The Batman (2022). I don't think this is poorly regarded, but I don't think it gets enough credit for being such a good film despite being a few years in the shadow of the Nolan trilogy - and still feels distinct, even arguably more "Batmany" than any other film version. Plus, Robert...

    Preparations for Super Bowl LIX?

Smudging sage so that the Illuminati ritual of half-time won't infect my family's subtle bodies.

    Superman (1978)

Still one of the greatest superhero flicks of all time, and one of my favorite childhood films - I re-watch it every few years (along with its sequel). I still cringe at the "Can you read my mind" scene, though.

    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

Underrated: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I just don't get the hate for this film. Or rather, I think much of it is based on the silly notion (especially prevalent at the time) that the One True Way to make a superhero film is the MCU formula which, in hindsight, got tedious. BvS is epic...

    Today I learned +

Today I learned that Qwen is quite pleasant to use, and helpful to work a problem or get guidance. It is rather striking how responsive it is, even towards conversational discussion. I'm very leery of AI in general, but had a quite positive experience exploring various topics.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Official Teaser Trailer (2025)

It is just a trailer, but man does that feel like it brings the joy back into superhero films. Looking forward to it.

How do you put aside your own feelings when reading?

Part of the joy of reading is that I get to enter the mind of someone else. I don't need (or even want) the events of the story to mirror my own personal worldview. Sometimes that can be nice - for instance, reading an author who sees things similarly and/or I think I would like personally. But...

    D&D 5E (2024) Where to next, WotC?

Well, here's a screenshot of my first version of it that is semi-complete (color-coded by campaign setting). I was re-formatting it with a second version, but never finished it.

    D&D General Humanoids...and world demographics

Thanks! Out of curiosity, are dwarves, elves, humans and orcs roughly similar in total population? And how big is this region?
