    D&D 5E (2024) Where to next, WotC?

This reminds me what occasionally happens with self-publishing: if it is popular enough, a big publisher snatches it up and (re)publishes under their imprint. Obviously rare, but not entirely so.

    D&D General Humanoids...and world demographics

Been thinking about humanoids lately for some reason (how could that be?!) and was wondering: What are the general demographics of humanoid species in your campaign world? If you don't have a homebrew, feel free to speculate on a published setting or the hypothetical "archetypal D&D world" as it...

    D&D 5E (2024) Where to next, WotC?

I tend to prefer a more subtle approach, through implication ;)

    D&D 5E (2024) Where to next, WotC?

Hmm...I could see them doing so selectively, but I don't see them re-doing all the story arcs. I've seen "Universes Beyond" mentioned, but don't know what it is beyond inference. Is there a link I can check out? Again, I could see them doing some of both, but think they'll feel obligated to...

D&D 5E (2024) A slightly different take on the new Monster Manual

Yeah, I'm not super picky about stuff like iconsistencies and errata...I mean, I probably spent 10% of my childhood hours poring over Gygax's books, so have low baseline expectations for D&D professionalism ;). I personally don't like the lack of humanoid entries - it just seemed too obvious...

Jeremy Crawford Interview: The Monster Manual and More

Sounds cool. Do you have your own epic rules? I still wish WotC would boldly go into really epic and even immortal rules, even if few ever play that way. I still have fond memories of their first RPG book The Primal Order, even if I never actually did anything with it.

    D&D 5E (2024) Where to next, WotC?

Some of you might remember the charts I used to share, that look liked this: I actually did them for every edition, though I was in the process of revising them a few years ago and got bogged down in 2E and gave up. Anyhow, I tried updating this one as a reference point for discussion, namely...

D&D General What would your "fourth core rulebook" be?

I had a similar thought and love this idea, but would definitely say not GH or FH - or any established setting. I think the key would be showing it being built throughout the text, so there isn't a finished product in mind with decades of material. This, I think, would make it more accessible...

Jeremy Crawford Interview: The Monster Manual and More

So it takes a few rounds to kill, eh? ;)

Jeremy Crawford Interview: The Monster Manual and More

Yeah, even if it isn't cosmologically the case, I feel that functionally speaking, D&D gods are more like Asgardians in the MCU: highly evolved alien entities, but true "divinities." I think this is where the "gamist" nature of D&D trumps any real attempt at "real" occult cosmology.

D&D 5E (2024) A slightly different take on the new Monster Manual

Yes, I have them as well - though haven't dived into them in any great depth yet.

D&D 5E (2024) A slightly different take on the new Monster Manual

Well, I never really took the approach of having a "bailiwick to defend," so not sure it would have mattered much. Or rather, I've never been much of a RAWist, so always felt like the official rules were a toolkit to adapt to your own preference and group style. Like everyone, I suppose, my...

Jeremy Crawford Interview: The Monster Manual and More

Well, I don't think there is a "right" answer - and it also depends upon source material. I don't know the biblical treatment well enough to really comment, but I do know a bit about the esoteric/occult views (especially Steiner). In Steiner's Anthroposophy, Seraphim are the highest angelic...

D&D General What would your "fourth core rulebook" be?

Through its long history, D&D has dabbled with various notions as to what is core, though from the beginnings of AD&D to the present--a span of about 45 years--the trio of the PHB, DMG, and MM has been central. Along the way, various tomes have vied for the spot as the "fourth core"; growing up...

Jeremy Crawford Interview: The Monster Manual and More

Yep. This is especially true if you use the celestial hierarchy of Dionysius the Areopagite, especially as it has been expounded by Rudolf Steiner and other esotericists. D&D's celestials could maybe equate with just angels (devas), archangels (planetars) and Archai (solars) - and those are just...

D&D 5E (2024) A slightly different take on the new Monster Manual

My personal context is important for what follows. I am not an active player - haven't played in a game in about five years, nor do I plan on playing within the foreseeable future. I will always love D&D, follow the game, and am not closed to playing at some point, but it just isn't a priority...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

The solution could have really been quite simple: Do exactly what they did (from what I can tell) and offer a stat entry for more traditional orcs, with language that passes whatever smell test they use (e.g. "Orcs, like humans, come in all shapes and sizes; some co-exist with other species, but...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

That picture is maybe the goofiest thing I've seen from WotC in a long time. It just feels so...awkward and lacking in any degree of cohesive world-building.

Lord of the Rings Role Playing (Free League 5e)

Maybe share the basics of. your campaign idea, which might give people more focus in their responses? Which region are you starting in? What is the general plot outline? Etc. I agree that some kind of thematic focus might be a good thing, but there's still ways to make a Fellowship-style...
