WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

Yeah this Tweet from Dixon Dubow certainly imply the cuts are pretty deep:

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

Yeah it’s pretty clear they got friends at WotC. Heck one of them was one of the main rule designers of Pathfinder 2e and from what understand WotC hired a lot of Paizo employees over the past few years.

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

Yeah it’s been a horrible year for reducing staff and closing studios in the game industry.

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

Really too bad. I can’t say I’m surprised though despite WotC being one of the more profitable parts of Hasbro it probably would be difficult to cut such a huge amount of the work force without cutting some of the WotC employees. On a video game message board there’s someone that works at one...

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

No one should get upset over clickbait thumbnails, it's a game youtubers got to play to get more views on their videos.

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

Yeah it's pretty common for layoffs to hit in March, June, September and December due to financial quarters ending but it hits even harder in December.

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

Wizards has been building their VTT in Unreal Engine for years. If they switch over to Larian's custom engine used in BG3 it would likely delay the VTT launch by years. Edit: They would also then have 2 choices: Recreate the functionality of the current 3D VTT in Larian's engine (and if that's...

D&D 5E (2014) Larian confirms they want to work on BG3 DLCs!!!

Yeah Valve is probably up there as one of the more profitable companies per employee in the US if not the world. Obviously we don't know for sure since Valve is a private company and keeps their finances a secret as they have a right to do but they only have like 350 employees (though they have...

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

I would guess it's probably a similar deal if Netflix has it in non US territories but I don't know for sure. Of course Paramount is getting paid but since it's a deal for first run movies who knows how the financial side of it works.

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

Honor Among Thieves being on Prime has nothing to do with the success or failure of the movie. Paramount and Amazon have a deal to bring their new movies to Prime a few months after Paramount Plus. I watched both Top Gun Maverick and Sonic 2 on Prime because of that deal.

D&D Movie/TV In hindsight DADHAT should have been saved for 2024.

I have to disagree to an extent on John Wick 4, if you look at the box office of that series it wasn't exactly hard to predict that 4 would be a hit on at least a similar level of 3 if it didn't do better, the series only did better and better with each entry and 3 was already fairly successful...

D&D Movie/TV In hindsight DADHAT should have been saved for 2024.

Yeah 2024 likely won't have as many big releases and it might have done better but it's hard to say what kind of deals Paramount had in place with their non Hasbro financiers for the film and some of their merchandise partners.

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

Yeah I'm sure Hasbro has high expectations for the VTT. It's very clear they're spending a ton of money on it and it will have a lot of ongoing costs, with them having to add new 5.5 content including I'm sure full adventures.

WotC Hasbro CEO Chris Cox, "I would say that the underlying thesis of our D&D business is all about digital,”

Well yeah, they spent a ton on DnD Beyond and the VTT looks like they have a bunch of programmers and artists working on it. It's clear they're spending a ton on digital and are expecting that to pay off.

    Paizo Announces Starfinder 2nd Edition

I doubt Paizo had high expectations for Enhanced sales, it was probably just something to get a bit more cash out of existing content before 2e.

D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 will now be releasing August 3rd on PC and September 6th on PS5, increased level cap, race & class details and more

Oh yeah I'm sure Starfield was a huge reason for the release date change for the PC version. Apparently reviewers are only getting review codes 4 days before launch so I'm expecting the game to come in hot with bugs and issues like so many other releases these past few years.

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

Yeah many superhero movies and other big budget films are now over $200 million so "only" $150 million was pretty reasonable all things considered. And honestly I thought in general the film looked great and you could really see the budget on screen (aside from the halflings looking really badly...

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

I think having the Paladin worked better than Drizzt ever would have. He was clearly meant to be an overpowered DM PC and he was perfect in that type of role.

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

I got to disagree about how you feel about the movie. I loved the characters, the world and lore was great, the humor was strong, and the tone of the movie was pretty similar to ever D&D/TTRPG I've ever played.

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

Variety is an movie industry trade and they're interviewing the CEO of Paramount. They are going to frame something like phrasing about the way a film did the way he wants, they obviously are going to want continued access to him and his company. You kinda also have to read between the lines...
