WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

For those demanding a pound of flesh in the form of terminations of leadership involved in the OGL decisions, I have an honest question: Would you rather have folks at the helm who've lived though this experience and and felt the wrath of the community, or some new suit who thinks they're the...

D&D General Are You Seriously Planning to Stop Playing and/or Running D&D Over The Recent OGL Developments?

I find the while OGL situation shameful and disappointing, but at the end of the day, (a) I really like 5E (and so far I like most of what I've seen from the play test) and (b) I really don't care for most of the other games out there that I've tried (PF2 in particular landed with a major thud...

D&D 5E (2024) Have we potentially seen the end of the OneD&D Playtest?

If WotC backs down from their current plan, which I think is increasingly likely (but by no means guaranteed), I think the best thing would be to hold off on a play test release to let tempers cool.

    D&D 5E (2024) Lifetime boycott of D&D-branded products?

A lifetime boycott doesn't make sense. The point of a boycott, or any protest, is to incentivize a company to reverse a point of contention. If and when they reverse course, folks should be prepared to do likewise--otherwise there's no incentive to change!

Selling the D&D brand and assets - Hasbro only way out of this mess?

I'd say the odds of selling off D&D are about as likely as me hitting the lotto (and I don't play). A slightly more plausible scenario (say if I bought a couple of those lotto tickets) would be Habsro spinning D&D, but probably not all of WotC and that sweet, sweet Magic money, off new...

Rumours: WotC Announcement Today; Insider Email Reveals Plans

The benefit to living in a world where all that matters is short term gains is that in the meanwhile, those who made the stockholders lose money, even for a few months, may still pay a price. The release of One D&D, when the profits may negate any lose of subs now, is quite a few quarters away...

Rumours: WotC Announcement Today; Insider Email Reveals Plans

I've taken a wait and see approach to this whole business so far, but (assuming today's announcement doesn't cast major doubt on this) looks like I'll be canceling my DDB subscription today. I'm paid through August, so I guess they'll have time to reverse course, but the statement will be made.

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Permanently Removes The Term 'Race'

I'm all for dropping the term "race" but I don't love the term "species." It sounds too modern. It'll suffice, but hopefully they can come up with something better over the course of the play test. What about "Kind?" As in humankind, elfkind? Clunky, but it feels more in keeping medievalish...

Dragonlance WotC Officially Confirms Takhisis and Tiamat Are The Same

Margaret Weis: “Tiamat and Takhisis are completely different… Tiamat has the golden arches, Takhisis has the golden arcs... Tiamat has the Big Mac, Takhisis has the Big Mic…”

Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

I'm not a fan of Tolkien's work--I just really dislike his prose style (it took me over 20 years to finish LotR)--so I went in with no knowledge of the lore beyond the movies. Having no preconceptions or expectations probably helped, because overall I enjoyed the show quite a bit. I thought it...

D&D Movie/TV Hasbro To Produce Official D&D Documentary

Hopefully this will be good. But I was always hoping for a big 3-part Ken Burns PBS documentary on D&D... maybe he'll do one on the darker side of the hobby: Part 1 "Pat Pulling and the Satanic Panic", Part 2 "Lorraine Williams and the Fall of TSR", Part 3 "Justin LaNassa and Nu TSR."

RPG Evolution: Older Than You Look

For many years I've gone with the notion that most races mature at roughly the same rate, with the longer lived ones aging slowing at adulthood--so everyone ages the same until around 20. If everyone is born around the same time they all look about the same at age 20, but by 40 the humans...

D&D General I want to fire a player.

That has also been my experience as well. It's never fun, but it's always the right call. One person really can spoil the fun for everyone else.

D&D General I want to fire a player.

Maybe I'm an outlier—or just a jerk—but I've had to "fire" probably eight or nine players over the past 30 odd years. Our core group of players was always a bit small, so were always felt like we needed one or two more, and often advertised for players (at the FLGS back in the day, later on...

D&D 5E (2024) What will One D&D Eventually Be Commonly Called

I think Anniversary edition is most likely the official name, though given it’s a 50th anniversary (and more anniversaries are yet to come) I think Gold edition is a real possibility. I expect many who were around during the 3.5 era will call it 5.5, but given the explosive popularity 5E has...

D&D General The Venn Diagram of D&D and Magic: the Gathering Players

I played Magic 2 or 3 times over the years, every time I thought it was extremely boring (as in what do you mean it was only 30 minutes? it felt like 2 excruciating hours). I really don’t get the appeal.

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D origins playtest survey is live

My basic feedback: Not a fan of the crit changes, though I’m not opposed to some measure of change to how DM crits work to help low level PC survivability (something like +1d6 for CR 2 and lower, +2d6 for CR 3-5, and so on). Half races is okay, but I’m not thrilled with it. I would prefer a...

D&D 5E (2024) How should multiclassing be implemented for ODnD?

The thing is you’ll never come up with a solution that pleases everyone, and WotC is looking for what is simple and appeals to the broadest audience. I don’t foresee it happening, but ideally there would be a simple standard system in the PHB, and some more granular optional alternatives in the...

Pre-generated characters for one-shot game; sex and gender breakdown. Opinions wanted.

One option that might work for the art is to skip right past gender (and race for that matter) and just use symbols that represent the character class, perhaps incorporating their primary weapon or magical implement (staff, wand, holy symbol, etc.).

D&D 5E (2014) With Fizban's and now Bigby's, what other groups do you think we'll see with their own books?

I filtered the necromancy spells and the only one that had a proper name associated with it was Abi-Dalzim’s horrid wilting, so that could be a possibility, but I think Vecna is a more likely choice.
