    D&D 5E (2014) [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

I'm not sure why it's news worthy that "Next" or "5th Edition" don't appear on the cover... look at your 3.0 and 4E books: Only 2nd Edition and 3.5 felt to need to put their edition info on the cover.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D "Core" Settings

Somewhere along the way (maybe last years Gencon?) Mearls mentioned the idea of campaign theme books, for example a seafaring book with feats, subclasses, and backgrounds relevant to the sea. I think such books could be a great place to offer lite versions of some of the less popular settings...

Columbus, OH (NW): D&D Group Looking for Players

My group is looking for one or two more to join our gaming group. The four players in our group are in their upper thirties, and have been playing together for years. We enjoy 4E, but currently we are playing D&D Next. We like a good mix of combat and role-play, and use miniatures and terrain...

    D&D 5E (2014) Playtest Fatigue?

I'm still play testing, but I haven't enjoyed it in several months. My group does it reluctantly, in hopes of offering useful feedback... it's tough because we all feel the game is usually moving in the wrong direction (for us anyway). We are actually splitting time between the play yest and...

Review of Ed Greenwood Presents: Elminster’s Forgotten Realms by Wizards of the Coast

Sounds mildly interesting, but in the pantheon of stuff I don't care about, the Forgotten Realms looms like Zeus.

D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest: Yay or Nay?

I've been pretty disappointed with the playtest materials so far, but this new packet seems to have a lot of great improvements that I really like. Now, if I can just convince my group to give Next another shot...

    Are You Still Playtesting?

My group has played 4 times now, and each session we liked the system less and less. We've decided to stop until they release new materials, but at this point, things aren't looking good for my group making the switch. The biggest complaint is that the system is too limited and...

Early Versions of D&D Next Character Sheets

Having played at DDXP (and been quite disappointed) I was VERY pleased to see how much the game had changed. It's also interesting to see how the game had apparently changed from the summit to the con a couple months later. This character sheet reminds me of the one thing I wish had stuck...

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

There's a lot of speculation on why Monte left, most of it related to taking a stand in the edition war, but in my experience most people leave a job for one of these three reasons: Money Job Satisfaction Personality Conflict Though there's always the 4th (slightly less common) reason...

D&D 5E (2014) "5E is of no interest to me" - really? Already?

Speaking as someone who played 5E and didn't like it much, even I can say I still have interest in it. I may not be convinced I'll switch when it gets released, but I'm still interested to see what they come up with. If for no other reason the intellectual curiosity about how WotC manages the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e have a "default setting" and cosmology?

I would rather there was no default setting. Perhaps the base books have the Greek pantheon as an example, or refer to gods in terms of their portfolio/domains (ie. death god, sun god, etc.), and then include several setting options in the DMG. This could be a 2- or 4-page spread for several...

D&D 5E (2014) Considering the D&D Next Playtest in Light of the WotC Seminars

I really don't like the opposed roll notion either--there's something wrong with the idea that a natch 20 could still miss, and doesn't a DM have to do enough rolling already?. I suppose you could hose rule that monsters "take a 10" on their save. For that matter, the monsters could "take a...

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

With all the talk about how fans of different editions would feel about the new game, I've been thinking a bit about it. Since I have played and loved every edition of D&D (other than OD&D). As much as anyone can I will attempt to rate the base game from the perspective of a fan of each...

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

For my character two sections were mostly equal, one was about 50% larger. My neighbor's sheet had a lot more empty space and the ratios looked a little different (but I didn't study it).

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Yes, each set of abilities was in it's won section. I had to look in three different places to know if I had bonuses for anything.

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Keeping the lights on and thriving are two different things. If there weren't 4E players, there would be no 5E because D&D would have been shelved by now.

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

It may not be representative of other groups, but the folks in our group who had started with 3E and especially 4E had the most negative impression of the game.

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

I think I know what you are referring to, and our group really disliked it. I think it will be unpopular, and hopefully will get feedbacked out.

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Each character was on a double-sided sheet of paper, with the spell casters having an extra double-sided sheet for spells. The character sheets had a lot of class description info, but I think it would be easy enough to fit on an index card, not counting spells. Bear in mind these characters...

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Since they let this cat out of the bag at the seminars, I feel comfortable saying I really liked the way themes were included and what they did. The races felt right to me too. As far as playability, that entirely depends on the rule modules. The the base game really tires to capture a 1E/2E...
