Books everyone seems to love, but you just can't

The Gormenghast series. I prefer my story focii to be humanoid rather than architectural.

Any crunchy RPG's out there anymore?

Were you aware that you can continue to play old games, even when newer ones come out? Maybe designers don't feel the need to reinvent the wheel when they are so many wheels already produced that the wheel-enthusiast can enjoy.

What do space empires fight over?

An enigmatic (but real) super-race who offers unimaginable wealth and power to the civilization who proves itself worthy. Of course, what they mean by "worthy" is not something any two races agree on. And at least a few of them think it must mean "ascendant in conquest".

D&D 5E (2014) Does this Celestial warlock invocation sound "too good"?

I would go with "Reroll 1s and 2s", just because I prefer to repurpose existing mechanics rather than adding new ones. Sacred Flame has a different enough use case to Eldritch blast - no disadvantage for using it in melee, may be able to damage a target whose AC is too high to hit - that it...

Test The Awfully Cheerful Character Builder

I picked "Ogre" and it didn't apply +1 to my Brawn and +2 to my Health. Do the bonuses have to be applied manually at the end?

D&D 5E (2014) PC wants to become undead

Have someone sell the player a potion that, if they drink it, will grant them eternal youth and beauty. But it takes 10 years to take effect. They are an adventurer. Either they won't live that long, or the campaign will end before that. Problem solved.

    Where Does Inspiration Come From?

Inspiration comes from Brazil, where it is shaped on tiny lathes.

D&D General Have You Actually Read the DM's Guide?

Don't be absurd. If I read it, how would I be able to complain that things in it, aren't in it?

Worlds of Design: What Defines a RPG?

Why don't we try starting with the assumption that some things are roleplaying games and other things - such as oil tankers or mango chutney - are not, and see if we can narrow the boundary down.

    D&D General Tall Miniature Bases?

Glue another spare base of the same width - or two - on the bottom. Also, "slot" bases, usually used for old metal miniatures and modern wargaming miniatures, tend to be higher than the "flat" bases usually used for modern plastic RPG miniatures.

Worlds of Design: What Defines a RPG?

Whether you are roleplaying in a game, is not the same thing as whether it is a roleplaying game. (No, that's not nonsense. Bear with me.) I will roleplay in ANY game, if you define "roleplaying" as "playing a role". Naming myself ? Speaking in character? Making choices based on the situation...

Worlds of Design: What Defines a RPG?

So, would "Honey Heist" be an RPG by the above definition?

Worlds of Design: What Defines a RPG?

"I will add that the desire to draw strong lines around RPGs has, historically, seemed to be less about wanting to actually understand our hobby, and more to do with gatekeeping and tribalism." You say that as if it's a bad thing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Barter Economy

How you can tell really successful adventurers have visited a small town? Sign outside the market: Eggs 5 Platinum each.

    Dragon Reflections #38

We played the heck out of Top Secret back in the day. It was a wildly swingy - dare I say "broken" ? - system, but it was also a tremendous amount of fun.

D&D General aasimar in human society

They aren't treated well at all. In fact they usually meet gruesome ends at the hands of jealous humans. (Aasimar depicted wearing white sock)
