In D&D, it' s only ethical to kill something if it has GP, XP, or magic items.
Whether it has a soul, sentience, an afterlife, or a sweet little grandma is irrelevant.
D&D is a murder simulator, not a morality problem.

But...why not just NOT enter the contest then?
It's like buying a lottery ticket. If your ticket loses, the lottery organization still keeps your money. If you aren't willing to walk away from it, don't enter in the first place.
Why is it "icky" if it's voluntary? If you don't want to sign the rights to that particular piece away ... don't enter the contest?
