The party only obliterates with that magic items help. Without it they're sludge. The opening breath attack will hit 2 or 3 of them since they don't have novel plot armor like in the books, and that will kill those 2 or 3 whether they save or not. As for simulation being poor in D&D, that's...

The point isn't suicidal dragons. The point is that the dragon facing X commoners with longbows either doesn't attack, attacks and does a bit of damage before running away, or it attacks for multiple rounds and dies. Commoners with longbows should not be able to keep an ancient dragon from...

It doesn't. 1 hit point of damage won't kill very many commoners. 1 hit point of damage kills every minion. A ten year old commoner with a single rock will rarely kill another commoner. A ten year old commoner with a rock will kill 1 in 20 minions. A 9th level magic missile will fail to kill...

Not everyone plays that way. Back in 2e was the last time we caught a PC doing that. The next time we got to civilization, we kicked that PC out of the party and the player had to make a new character. During 3e we had a guy make a sorcerer who caught the party in two fireballs. We let the PC...

Correct. There were several variables other than 5e design that contributed a great deal to its success. This last Superman movie didn't have those other variables.

I love when people try to blame our dislike of that style on our "lack of imagination." Because we'd like it the same way they do if we were just capable of imagining it their way.

I think the idea is that commoners are equal to minions, which of course they aren't. A commoner has 1d8 hit points whether he's fighting another commoner or a god. That is very much different from a minion ogre of a higher CR than the ogre with 111 hit points being killed by a single commoner...

Peasants with longbows can hit the dragon if it can hit them. There's a number and like @EzekielRaiden I forget what it is, but if you have that many or more commoners with longbows, even an ancient dragon will die or be forced to flee. That number is well below the number you would find in a...

I don't think bad players are any more common per capita than bad DMs. It's just that there are a lot more players than DMs, so you encounter more of them.

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

I think the idea that space combat would be fought with missiles to be incorrect. It would have to be energy weapons like high powered lasers or really, nothing. The afore mentioned energy weapons combined with advanced targeting computers would mean no missiles would ever strike an enemy...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

Given the impact of D&D over the last 40 years, I'm surprised that house hasn't been tagged as a historical location.

Sure, but 5 bad DMs don't outnumber 10,000 good and average DMs. I firmly believe that the number of truly bad DMs is very small compared to the number that try to DM in good faith.

I doubt every DM like that moved to Victoria. In fact, I doubt any DM has moved to another city or country to be with other like minded DMs. Rather, I think it's just very, very common for DMs to hold the rules they create as.............................rules. The very small percentage will...

Weird. The book I'm reading doesn't have that sentence. It was probably an errata put in later on.

I don't remember anyone here saying that they just change rules on a whim. There are reasons for rules changes. That's not accurate. It's 100% of the time. And for every game out there. You can't name me a single game where the players/DMs can't sit down and alter the rules as they see fit...

Where does it say every character has to participate? I can't find that.
