D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I blame 3.5e and onward for that mentality, really. During 1e and 2e, any magic sword was prized because it meant being able to hurt things that were immune to anything needing a +1 or higher to hurt. 3e continued that feeling by making DR 15/+1, 30/+2 and the like. Once 3.5e came around and...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I think that's more because people get entrenched in their arguments about X, Y or Z. Folks challenge those ideas, they defend, the defense gets challenged, and suddenly the argument appears to be very much only about realism being the king of kings. When these discussions get boiled down and...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Yeah. That would drive me away from the game. This tough angry human isn't a human, he's an orc. This other tough angry human isn't a human, he's a dwarf. This third tough angry human isn't a human, he's a goliath. I want humans to be consistently human. If I want one to be tough, he'll...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Your games with their rings of resistance on every finger are not the norm. Unless they've had time to prep, it's unlikely that half the party will just happen to be resistant to fire. Wow. That sounds mind numbingly dull. Why on Earth would anyone want to play a healbot and not someone who...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I don't get that impression from anyone here. We just tend to follow the Gygax thought on the matter. "ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS is first and foremost a game for the fun and enjoyment of those who seek to use imagination and creativity. This is not to say that where it does not interfere...

I don't see a problem with this. Have that person hack at a 1 inch thick flat rock and he is not going to do much. Have someone who has a greatsword and leverages it with great strength and there's a good chance that he's breaking the rock. It's just more important for the death by a thousand...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Why does being an angry human give you an intelligence of 7? Why would that give the person a bonus action movement towards hostile creatures? Why do all angry humans get that? If not all of them, why do only some of them get the extra movement when all tough, angry humans are tough and angry...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

If the mechanics are not representing portions of the fiction, then they have failed at their job. If you have different mechanical representations for the same fictional circumstance, the game has failed at its job. The game should be coherent, not be fragmented into different ways to...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

That NPC druid isn't the druid class. It's like the Acolyte background. They are priests and clerics are priests. The "druid" NPC isn't the PC class with a different mechanical representation. It's just something else that is using the same name, like if my paladin called himself a fighter...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

To be fair, we weren't even out of high school and only really had the teachings of Gygax to follow, so make things punitive was sort of the way things were done if you didn't want the players to have it.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I don't know. It was a looooooooooong time ago. It certainly wasn't for balance reasons. The same DM also had his own magic items tables and there was a special chart that you could reach that included all the deity weapons from the Deities and Demigods. At one point one of my PCs had a +6...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I think he did read her books. She had shields(psionic defenses), psionic attacks, psionic powers, etc. He just put them into the game in a modified fashion the same way the 1e ranger is Aragorn, yet not exactly Aragorn.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I think 75%-80% of the groups I played with didn't allow it. One of the groups I played with that did allow it let you roll for it, but if you failed you lost 1 point of int, wis and cha as a penalty for trying. In that group I was the only one who ever tried, and even then only if I had 1...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Shedu, Ki-Rin, Coatl, Mind Flayer, and Intellect Devourer are psionic creatures in the MM. Cerebral Parasite and Thought Eaters are anti-psionic PC monsters. More psionic creatures got added in later monster books.
