Skeletons and the Need for Bludgeoning Weapons

Okay, let's assume you're right, and Skeletons have to be broken down to tiny pieces to kill them. So, they can take more damage than a normal human. Leaving aside the fact that reassembling would come under "regeneration" in D&D. Why is it superior to say "Skeletons have low hitpoints, and...

Skeletons and the Need for Bludgeoning Weapons

I'm sorry, but you know this HOW? Are you a visitor from an alternate reality where walking skeletons are a real problem, encountered commonly? When walking skeletons are depicted in D&D artwork, all the bones are whole. Cracking even a single bone may very well be all it takes to break the...

Would you use different combat rules in the same adventure?

I voted for "in different combats", but thinking about it, if a combat changes significantly part-way through, I'd happily switch it to a different mechanic. But only if it's a big, surprise, change. I don't want to always have to switch from grid-> narrative for mopping up. (Although in 4e I...

Skeletons and the Need for Bludgeoning Weapons

Not actually true. You see, the fleshy humanoid has SKIN, and MUSCLE, which spread out the damage from the bludgeoning weapon, making it less likely to shatter bones. Without those things getting in the way, and spreading out the energy, bones are actually a lot easier to shatter (hard to cut...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

This is why I think Subclasses would be great. The Fighter as the versatile overclass, equivalent to the Wizard. And then Subclasses: Knight, Archer, Skirmisher(could be a rogue subclass, or even both), Berserker(could be a barbarian subclass) With more in later books. Just as the wizard...

Skeletons and the Need for Bludgeoning Weapons

I think that DR was overused in 3.5 If skeletons need to have resistances give them, say: Resist 5 piercing Vulnerable 5 bludgeoning In 3.5 things never had vulnerabilities to weapon types, only resistances, which fed into the caster-superiority issue.

Uniting the Editions, Part 2 Up!

Player B makes an ability check using their flat "Generally competent" bonus. Player F makes a skill check, which is an ability check with or without a bonus depending on their skills Player T makes a skill check, which is an ability check with or without a bonus depending on their skills The...

    Tweaking Surges: Wounds

The idea of Heroic Surges is an interesting one. The main possible problem with them is that, if you can spend them on lots of different things, it might be possible to run out in a single encounter, leading to 15 minute days.

D&D 5E (2014) Hope for an open GSL?

Or a continually changing and increasing set of modules, with which ones are core being updated. It works for MTG, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they decided that, given as MTG is making great profits, they really should learn from its business model.

D&D 5E (2014) Hope for an open GSL?

It's far, far too late for that now. Releasing 4e under the GSL rather than OGL drove away a lot of the third party support; for obvious reasons. Changing the license now? It's too late, the damage is done.

D&D 5E (2014) Hope for an open GSL?

The thing is: The evidence says that they can't afford a 6th edition. 6th edition isn't something they're planning on, because if 5th fails, they're dead. As such, the "Pathfinder Possibility" of an OGL is irrelevant. Either they succeed, in which case nothing like pathfinder exists because...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

Again, Surges don't, innately, have to be restored every day. The fact that everything is restored daily in 4e is a fact about 4e, not a fact about surges. Surges can easily be implemented such that they take time to heal.

    Tweaking Surges: Wounds

I really love the mechanic of Healing Surges. But I get that a lot of people don't like them. The thing is, a lot of the arguments against them are more based on the flavour than on the basic mechanic. So here's an idea I was thinking about on how to tweak them: For each 25% of your max HP...

Weapon Damage Types - DDN Blog

Without any muscles to keep their head from falling off? That's going to make a difference. And if HP=Damage, a treant is going to have a much, much larger number of HP, so the vulnerability works. (setting aside the fact that HP != damage in D&D for a second)

Weapon Damage Types - DDN Blog

I think that using DR/x for everything is a bit limiting, and tends to weaken weapon-using classes. If you're going to use damage types, don't just have resistances, have vulnerabilities too.

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

HP, to me, includes exhaustion, being battered and bruised, scratched and tired. Things you can recover from, and work around, given time to pull yourself together. It's certainly not being poked through with spears. (Note: Things like poison work on the basis that even a SCRATCH from a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

Simple. There's only so far a body can be pushed. The basic healing spells can't break that limit, but more powerful ones can draw life from one person, to heal another, or can even heal someone using nothing more than the power of the caster. You have to remember, there were sources of healing...

    D&D 5E (2014) OGC for 5E?

It would, however, be a very good way for them to say "We absolutely are not moving on to another edition, this is the last one" Because Pathfinder only managed to exist because they stopped supporting 3.x. If they have an OGL for 5e, that problem will only arise if they stop supporting 5e...
