Am I missing something in monster design?

Do you have access to the old monster guidlines? If so, what I would recommend is to compare the monsters to the old guidelines. See how the monsters differ from those guidelines (these differences are the "tweaks") and then apply those tweaks to the new guidelines. All the design work of...

Am I missing something in monster design?

Not really. The guidelines are flat, but that's because they're just guidelines. Sounds like a Brute to me. Guessing you missed that point? So 3d10+4 would be my preference. But 2d10+9 could also work. That's only if you're keeping things simple. He could do 3d4+9, or 2d4+7 and an...

    HOS Paragon Paths up

Cool. Hadn't noticed that change. Interestingly, that's pretty much exactly how we were running it anyway :-)

    HOS Paragon Paths up

Nocturnal is yet another PP that I'll be houseruling to work in beast form. Other than that, both the previewed PPs look nice. Oh, actually, the shadowthief's AP feature is really rather weak.

OGL and GSL - can someone clarify the differences?

The phrasing and typesetting can be copyrighted. So copy paste will fall foul of that.

    Enemies going stealth????

Look at the skill list on a player's character sheet. The ability score the player adds to a given skill is the ability score a monster will add to the same skill.

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

    1) Michael Jordan knows he's exceptional. 2) Michael Jordan's MD will know that he's exceptional very well, because Michael Jordan's lifestyle has put different strains on it from those you would find on your average modern, western, human. 3) No-one's mother thinks that their kid is just a...

    Shadow Races up!!!

Yeah, that seems to be the intended shadow theme. Small disadvantages, and good advantages to make up for it.

Hey! You got a quibble in my prophecy!

Or their final blow won't be killing. "You strike the witch king down, and he lies on the floor, looking near death, but you can see he will recover 'No man can kill me' he shouts" He's not dead (yet) but assuming a non-human or non-male, or adolescent, or elderly, party member is present he...

D&D 4E How did 4e take simulation away from D&D?

The real world works on a bell curve system. This is a major point of unreality in all D20 and D% systems: The real world has a bell curve for almost every kind of chance. The D20 world has a flat, hard-edged, probability. That is more of an egregious violation than the squares thing could ever...

    The Vampie Class preview

Here's the post I was thinking of: RPGnet Forums - View Single Post - [Historical] Where did the Cleric/Mage split come from?

    The Vampie Class preview

IIRC, Old Geezer said that there was someone playing a vampire in Gygax's games before they added the cleric.

    On shfting and jumping

Jumping can't move you more than the speed of the movement action unless you have a power that says otherwise. That doesn't say it's a shift, so it's not. You don't, however, have to make a skill check. Because it doesn't tell you to, it just tells you to jump/climb that distance.

    The Vampie Class preview

The problem with that is the "weakened (save ends)" If you were weakened only while in sunlight, it wouldn't be too bad. But for a striker, getting "weakened (save ends)" based on your cloak blowing aside is going to really, really, hurt. The 10 damage is unimportant in comparison. Hopefully...

Must-have advancement options for a playtest?

I know I'd get asked about Druid, if it's a D&D based game. So, that'd be a handy one to have. IMO that would equate to 1] Either expanding the cleric spell list (ie. level 1 in druid gives new spells for levels 1-4 in cleric, level 2 for levels 5-7, level 3 for levels 8-10) or granting new...

    Limiting At-Will Powers

No, you're missing the point. If you kick someone in the shins, they're likely to step backwards. In 4e that's called a PUSH. I don't intend to come off as a jerk. But when I see something I consider ludicrous it may be hard for me to avoid letting that show. Except that your way of limiting...

    Limiting At-Will Powers

So, basically, you've declared that PC at-wills can only be done one way, while NPC at-wills can be done any number of ways. There's no way a PC could one time be pushing the person on the torso with the shield, and another time be kicking them in the shins while holding the shield near their...

At 1st level, how powerful would you say PCs are in any edition of D&D?

A 5-person 1st level party, against 5 level 3 monsters, will win more often than not in my experience. Now, if they've not got their dailies (ie. they've already been in one or two fights that day) the monsters have a better chance. But a level 1 PC is a lot closer to a level 3/4 standard, than...

    Limiting At-Will Powers

Call at-will powers "abilities" or "capabilities" There, done. At-wills aren't meant to be special. They're meant to be the things you can do. The fact you can do them makes you special, but doing them isn't special. An at-will is like Robin Hood shooting a guy with an arrow. He's Robin Hood...
