    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Investigation?

I've been tempted recently, with the megadungeon the group is currently working through, to remove passives entirely, or to change how passives work. In the former idea, the PCs don't notice anything if they're not going, "I'm going to check that!" Tough cookies if they should have, and trigger...

How do we fix the Sorcerer?

I like the idea of spending hit dice to regain sorcery points; might incorporate that. The individual origins should give bonus spells, though; just a couple really thematic ones. The idea of granting the sorcerer all (or maybe just one or two more) of the metamagic abilities are very...

    Apparatus of Kwalish

Anybody got any modules that use this...? One of my players has requested this magic item every single game for the last three years, and I can never figure out a way to work it in. The upcoming sandbox game I have on the back burner needs a quest that gets one and then uses it to do something...

D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

Yeah, it's really hit and miss. As both a player and a DM, I've seen it a bunch of times. Hell, I've had it on two characters that I've played (a Paladin and a Battlemaster Fighter; oh, Rian, death came too swiftly for thee). I didn't ban it until three campaigns ago, when a swashbuckler rogue...

D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

I can understand that, as well! I actually hated the lucky feat for a long time, but ended up changing my mind after reading Pratchett's Guards! Guards!. I treat the Lucky feat like the one-in-a-million freak accident that just seems to happen; as Fred and Nobby said, "It's a one in a million...

D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

Its fun, and it expends a use of a daily ability; I love the thematic of a barbarian being surprised, and getting so angry at the fact that he moves faster than the enemy expects him to! Its a very different sort of thing from, "I ignore surprise because of this ability I have; doesn't really...

D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

Correction: While there is no surprise round, if you're surprised, you do not get your action or your reaction (PHB, pg. 189), regardless of your place in the initiative order. However, that's not solely my reason for objecting to the feat; I also feel that its not a 5e sort of mechanic in...

D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

Alert: +5 Initiative and not being able to be surprised actually harmed the fun of our group, so I banned it. Observant: I dislike the straight +5 to passives; makes using traps and stealth almost impossible, and that's boring. Great Weapon Master + Sharpshooter: The -5/+10 damage thing is...

D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

The only thing I really ban are the majority of the Unearthed Arcana feats, and Alert, Observant, Great Weapon Master, and Sharpshooter. I'm considering changing how passives work to allow Observant back in, but no way will I allow people to never be surprised ever. That's just silly.

Self Publishing: What's An Artist Worth?

Morrus, please do more articles like this! I just started doing a little writing for a 3pp, and this is super useful.

The Pathfinder 2 Barometer! Vote your initial hot take!

I am intrigued, but I still think its a bad decision on Paizo's part.

Pathfinder 2E Paizo Announces Pathfinder 2nd Edition!

Oh, boy. I'm...not sure this is a good move, personally. I've always felt that part of Pathfinder's draw was its mechanical complexity and the sheer amount of options that it provided. It seems like they might be moving away from that, as did Wizards of the Coast.

In your most recent game, were human variants allowed?

I do allow variant humans, although only one player made one for my current campaign; the rest are half-elves and elves. No one wanted to play a dwarf, even though they're really cool in my setting... However, that being said, I also give bonus feats at 1, 5, 11, and 17th level (in addition to...

Editions of D&D you have played the most in your life

I started with 4e in my D&D experience (played other stuff for a while before that); odd, I know. I then got to try B/X, 2e, 3.5, PF, and liked different things about them. 5e has most likely seen the most use, though.

D&D 5E (2014) So, how hard is it to kill PCs anyway?

I have killed a character with sewer plague, botfly swarms, and piranha swarms. Doesn't take a lot.

D&D 5E (2014) How to calculate Passive Perception

I've actually been tempted to change how passives work, perhaps making it just your modifier for your passives.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the next adventure book and when is it coming?

If it turns out to be Planar, I'm betting it'll be The Great Modron March, a series of adventures following, as the name would imply, a March of Modrons, perhaps the first adventure being moved to FR to begin the path through the Planes of Existence. Then, if I'm right, the latter adventure will...

It's Time To Pre-Order Your Copy Of Into The Borderlands

Yeah, I gotta say I'd have preferred a Tales from the Yawning Portal type thing. Preferably with more of the older adventures, and no reprints.

D&D 5E (2014) PC Permadeath: Yea or Nay?

I leave that entirely up to the players and their characters. If they can get the dead character resurrected or raised, then more power to them! However, I won't pull punches (its one of my biggest rules) and if what I've prepared means that their soul is literally not available for...

Unearthed Arcana Spores, Brutes, and Inventors: Unearthed Arcana Brings You Three New Subclasses

This is probably the most likely scenario; especially given in one of the Brute's ability, it specifically says, "your level in this class", which leads me to believe it's actually going to be a different class altogether.
