D&D General Why Unbalanced Combat Encounters Can Enhance Your Dungeons & Dragons Experience

At the time I was posting, I thought I had seen someone earlier in the thread posting an argument about death being part of the story, to trivialise the need to balance - and I read your post in light of that. However I am no unable after several quick scans to find what post might have first...

D&D General Why Unbalanced Combat Encounters Can Enhance Your Dungeons & Dragons Experience

My bolding. This is not a free pass to murder PCs. Preventing a random player character death from being a serious blow to having a good time and the overall memorable shape of the story is a tricky art indeed. More often it tend toward stories most involved rather want to forget.. Rare are the...

D&D General Why Unbalanced Combat Encounters Can Enhance Your Dungeons & Dragons Experience

While I absolutely agree that this is a way to play I tend to find enjoyable, I have to emphasize that it come with a load of non-obvious consequences. Maybe the most obvious is that the players must be prepared to lose. This philosophy will lead to stakes players really dont want to fail go...

D&D General What Does the Choice of Dice Mean for the RPG? (+)

I find this analysis of dice associations a bit circumvent. To me what is going on is that we have essentially 3 main movements in the RPG space right now. The traditional, the light weight OSR/FKR philosophy and PbtA. It just so happens that the two later tend toward D6s, while the former tend...

D&D General The Fate of Bargle

It wasn't murder, as it was clearly self defence. Ask yourself what Aleena was doing there? She was clearly breaking in on his household. She was discovered with the killer of his pet snake, blood still dripping from his blade. In this dark world filled with opportunitists ready to slay anyone...

D&D 5E (2014) Should D&D be easier to learn? If so, how would you do it?

This is one of the reasons I think it make more sense to ditch stats rather than class if anything should be simplified. Choice of class is intuitively simpler, and has a much larger impact on the game than the stats. And it is not automatic that more experienced players shy away from simpler...

D&D 5E (2014) Should D&D be easier to learn? If so, how would you do it?

My 10 cents. Dont start with stats, skills and backgrounds. These subsystems take a lot of space on the character sheet, and can relatively easily be introduced once the players are more familiar to the game, and want to add mechanical effect of their concepts to the game. Depending on the game...

    D&D 5E (2014) About Morally Correct Outcomes in D&D Adventures [+]

Thank you! I think these are great examples of endings that would work great for a tailored adventures. However I think all of these would be very dubious to put as the only "good" ending in a published adventure. While it is easy to see some players that would highly enjoy these outcomes, I...

    D&D 5E (2014) About Morally Correct Outcomes in D&D Adventures [+]

Ah, you edited in a great example! I agree that Treasure Island has quite a feel good ending. But would this have worked in an RPG as the provided "good" ending of a written adventure? I am not sure. While in the book we can get the feel good by accepting the protagonists values as the important...

    D&D 5E (2014) About Morally Correct Outcomes in D&D Adventures [+]

But do it make a difference to the feel good aspect if this pile came from the hoard of an evil dragon, or by plundering the taxman of a benevolent king? I think it would..

    D&D 5E (2014) About Morally Correct Outcomes in D&D Adventures [+]

I am curious what sort of situation you have in mind that is feel good, while morally grey/black? I could not think of any when I formulated my post. At least I would say they appear very tightly coupled from all feel good examples I have in mind. Maybe I should emphasize that I here are...

WotC What is the last WotC adventure you played in or DM'd?

I actually was a guest player for a single session toward the end of tomb of annihilation. Beyond that the only full length adventure I have played was red hand of doom back when that was fresh. I can't remember any time I have run anything by wizards unless dungeon magasine adventures count...

    D&D 5E (2014) About Morally Correct Outcomes in D&D Adventures [+]

I think perhaps an ilaminating take on this issue might be rather than focus on the highly charged word "morality" rather try to use the more positively charged term "feel good". In various entertainment it is often easy to identify works that is clearly "feel good", and others that very...

You've just taken over WotC, what do you do?

I always assumed this would be the kind of microtransactions they were going for. After all the transactions are still micro independently of who made the content?

Drafts do not come with contracts attached?

Document. Just document. The 1.1 document that was leaked.

Drafts do not come with contracts attached?

I really think this draft word is a giant red herring. The real issue here was that wizards claim they were mainly soliciting feedback, and it is this claim that is disputed. The word "draft" only come up as a short form to describe the issue above, but this is fortunate for wizards if the...

D&D General What is the last OGL adventure you DM'd or played in?

Tower of the black pearl by Harley Stroh, published in Goodman games' dungeon crawl classics #29: The adventure begins. Nice adventure that I have run several times as one-shot. Skipping the upper level though as I found it a bit cheesy. The antology is great with a lot of varied starter dungeons.

    D&D 5E (2014) Making Combat Mean Something [+]

I take issue with this. Are you certain what you really want isn't a real risk of  losing? The reason the game is made to make it so hard to die is that brutal experience has shown that dying just are not any fun in most rpgs. However it is very possible to lose in ways that are much cooler...

Drafts do not come with contracts attached?

I think this is the key difference recognising something as intended as a draft or not. My understanding is that the term sheets came essentially pre signed by wizards. (electronic documents might make this non-obvious though).

Drafts do not come with contracts attached?

There is one key feature identifying your screenshot as a draft: There are two signature fields, and neither are signed. If one of the fields had been signed, the situation would have been very different. For electronic documents the practice might differ making it less obvious. However my...
