    Questions about Pearl of Power

The biggest advantage that the ring of wizardry has over the pearl of power is its impact (or lack of) on the action economy. To use a ring of wizardry, you just wear it. To use a pearl of power, it is... Round 1 - Cast a spell Round 2 - Use the pearl of power to get your spell back Round 3 -...

The Toughest Part of Dungeon Mastering........well to me at least.

This is good stuff, right here. I recall one campaign that I was a player in, started off with riots in the streets and a massive fire ala the Great Fire of London or the Great Chicago Fire. Good times.

The Toughest Part of Dungeon Mastering........well to me at least.

I often make the players themselves determine how they know each other and what are the natures of their relationships. Sometimes these relationships form the basis of a campaign that is different than what I originally had in mind. In one such instance, the players all decided that they would...

How should a GM handle refused plots

So... I've been thinking about this particular thing a little bit, and it actually has come into play for a character that I've recently made for a campaign taking place in Waterdeep (the Forgotten Realms). The more that I think about a character before play begins, the more of a jerk that...

Ok GMs... I have a question

As usual, with this sort of thing, the best advice is to talk it out with these players of yours. Something like, "Hey, you [player number one] and [player number two] seem to be enjoying [aspect of game x]. I've got some cool ideas for [aspect of game y] that I think we could introduce into...

How should a GM handle refused plots

I would very much rather come up with a few details at a time about a character during play than worry about a whole life's story all at once. Sure, I will likely have an immediate, 'reason for adventuring.' which may be something like, "can't cope with civilized society." or, "it beats living...

How should a GM handle refused plots

I find it highly unlikely that you could fit all of the information that you've said above that you require into six sentences. If you had examples, from characters that are (were) actually in games, that would help. It still seems like a butt-load of work, on top of making the character in the...

How should a GM handle refused plots

Yes. But, primarily, for me. Coming up with a backstory, a family, a work history, and so on, for a character that I haven't played yet, and don't even know if I will like...? No thank you.

How should a GM handle refused plots

This sounds like way too much work.

    That hurts...

Away from the table and outside the game, make the case to your DM as to what the problem is, and how it is affecting your enjoyment of the game. If your DM decides to let the current ruling stand, then you'll have to either learn to live with it or leave the game.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you time your players in combat?

Another alternative, when players start to lose focus, is to take a break... Granted, you may not want to do that in the middle of a combat, but that may still be better than meandering through a fight while everyone is distracted.

Any good examples of TTRPGs with high degree of "Asymmetry" I might have missed?

Are you purposely disregarding the different roles of the dungeon master (or whatever it is called in the specific game) and the rest of the players? That is the most extreme example of play asymmetry. The game that the game master is playing is vastly different from that of the other players.

    Judgement calls vs "railroading"

For this to well and truly be a railroad, the players would have to... 4) Find a clever and unexpected way to defeat the orcs that the DM didn't think of... ...and then the DM would have to overrule, counteract, or otherwise negate the clever thing that the players did to force one of the DM's...

How important is game balance to you?

Some of the most fun that I've had in rpgs have come from some of the least balanced games (RIFTS, anyone?). Not to mention the inherent imbalance between the Dungeon Master (or whatever) and the rest of the players. Roleplaying games are primarily cooperative activities, rather than...

New RPG, what are rules and concepts you love in rpg's?

When I say that it is the prettiest. I literally mean that when graphed out, it looks more bell shaped. It is aesthetically pleasing to look at (and has the added benefit of having a number of combinations that is a power of 2). There are some mathematical 'advantages' in that the larger range...

New RPG, what are rules and concepts you love in rpg's?

I like games with a lot of complexity in character generation. I like to see the power gamers min max the living poop out of it during character creation. What I don't like is games where some of those choices are clearly bad and some of those options are clearly good for the typical activities...

Pathfinder 1E High level Pathfinder game + large group. Need help with APL/CR

The main problem that you'll face when running a party with 8 player characters is the sheer number of actions that the player character party can take. Especially when facing a single, "powerful" foe, eight player characters are going to have a massive advantage vis a vis the action economy...

D&D 5E (2014) What do I tell players about my overly complex political world?

Not more than 3-5 sentences at a time, and not unless they (the players) ask about it.
