D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

To me... if it is reasonable that hit point damage does not equate with physical injury, then it is equally reasonable that physical injury does not equate to hit point damage. Having a bleeding liver and a sliced up face won't necessarily impact your fighting ability, so there is no reason that...

So, I hate pdfs. Any advice on hating them less?

My suggestion would be to try going full immersion. Get whatever pfds you'd need for the games that you actually play, and temporarily forgo using real books altogether, see if you can't overcome your dislike through just the sheer momentum of, "this is what I've got to work with."

    I'm making an rpg

Getting other people to run your game is an absolute MUST. Anything that the DM or players have questions about during those games is an area that needs improvement and clarification in your rules text. Also, you should be able to hand your game over to absolute beginners, and have them make...

D&D 5E (2014) Looking for Campaigns for 14+ level PCs

By the time characters are 14th level, they should have goals of their own. Their pursuit of those goals is the main quest. Whatever nonsense that comes up in the meantime (Ultron wants to take over the world, blerg) is a side quest.

Unpopular Opinion: People Shouldn't Review Adventures They Haven't Run

Allow me to be the voice of dissent (or don't, you're not the boss of me). Not only should you (yes, I mean you) be reviewing adventures before you run them. You should review those adventures before you've read them, before you've seen anything about them, before they're even written. An...

Consent in Gaming - Free Guidebook

I extend a lot more courtesy to strangers than I do to my friends.

    Constructive Criticism for Your GM

One GM that I have has this problem particularly badly (as do I, to a lesser extent). I complain to him about it all the time. The Problem: Session 0: Hey, guys! I've got a cool campaign that I want to run, blah blah blah... Sessions 1 through 4 or so: Exciting stuff happens... Session 0: Hey...

D&D General How common are adventurers?

In the campaigns that I typically run, troubleshooters (what people in-world call professional adventurers / questers / problem-solvers) are somewhere between "not unheard of" and "you do what now?" They are a pretty normal part of the world, and are necessary because otherwise the world would...

TSR The Origin of Monty Haul

I tend to give out few, but very powerful treasures. That said, they are not always useful when found. For instance, in one campaign that I ran, I believe that the characters were mostly 6th or 7th level when they defeated a regional warlord (job description, not class) who had a very powerful...

    D&D 5E (2014) XP for Absent Players

I award both group and individual xp. XP is awarded for achieving goals (determined by the players). Everyone gains group xp, upon achieving a goal that the group has pursued together. Individuals gain individual xp for goals they have pursued separately from the group. Characters whose players...

D&D General Are the Races of D&D races of Human or seperate Species according to lore?

2nd Edition (and other editions) used demi-human mostly for elves, dwarves, and the other 'goodly' races and humanoid for orcs, goblins, and the other 'evil' races. 3rd edition used the humanoid type for all of the less fantastical races that have two arms and two legs and are not too big...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle insight?

I am running a different edition of D&D. I use a variety of house rules, but they do not impact whether or not a player might choose to retry a skill check.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle insight?

The game that I'm running doesn't use ability checks to resolve skill rolls. There is a specific mechanic for trying things over and over again until success. The player chose not to use that mechanic.

I don't know, I did not ask the player.

Likely, I would knock politely and ask the ogre if they had heard the good word.

D&D General Who is your favorite NPC (not a god)?

Sagiro from Sagiro's Story Hour or possibly Soneillon from Sepuchrave's story hour.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle insight?

So in my game, that would go something like this... DM: Neatly squirreled away under a cleverly disguised false floorboard, Briggs finds the assassin guildmaster's lockbox. What do you do? Walt: It has to be trapped, there have been traps all over the place. Briggs checks it for traps. I got...

    D&D 5E (2014) Players: Why Do You Want to Roll a d20?

Player characters in a campaign that I ran also had a dinosaur named Chompy that followed them around. It mostly like to wait until the wizard fell asleep and then chew on his robes.
