Why is Min/Maxing viewed as bad?

I think, though, that is exactly the 'problem' with min/maxing(which, from now on, I would like to type as mm). It's associated with this very nebulous 'munchkin' term which has various different meanings, all of which are negative for those who understand it to mean them. What is a munchkin...

Why is Min/Maxing viewed as bad?

I believe I have found the answer to my question. Having the term 'munchkin' appear in the thread makes me realize that min/maxing is reviled because it is lumped in with said term and all understood connotations. How I understand the term is not as most understand it. This is unfortunate...

Why is Min/Maxing viewed as bad?

I regret that you are correct in this; throughout the thread I've been attempting to preserve the clarity of these terms as I understand them in order to avoid confusion. Alas.

    Has D&D become too...D&Dish?

Raven Crowking: I agree that combat went A LOT faster in 2e than in 3e. However this, IMO, is due to the fact that the combat options in 2e were so very limited comparatively. That being said, I wouldn't put forth the argument that 3e combat is streamlined. The only comparison that would make...

Why is Min/Maxing viewed as bad?

While I did not intend for a debate on playstyles, I suppose that such is inevitable with such a question. Anyway, I think now that part of the hatred for min/maxing is that it, like many(possibly all) gaming styles has varying definitions between gamers. I view it as a character trying really...

Why is Min/Maxing viewed as bad?

Cool I have a hoard! I should probably get a horde to protect my hoard, unless all the available hordes have already been whored out.:) Jeez, what the hell. I'm hijacking my own thread with nonsense.

[OotS] One always tells the truth...

Is 'wallowing' the word you want to use? It seems to have negative connotations that you don't intend. Unless you do intend, in which case I'll shut my stupid mouth:) Anyway, I'd just like to take this chance to say that I'm glad for the existence of the strip. Possibly I should tell Rich...

Why is Min/Maxing viewed as bad?

Well, as I understand min/maxing, the term itself doesn't assume a combat focus, just a distinct one. A bard or rogue with bukku social skills but little to nothing in the way of pointy stick waving ability is just as min/maxed as a combat monster, but maybe that's the rub. It is quite often...

    Has D&D become too...D&Dish?

I like my D&D to be D&Dish. Where else am I going to get that? It's been mentioned numerous times in various posts that it doesn't really reflect any of the other fantasy and that it has its own vision of fantasy, so yeah ... I mean no. It isn't too D&Dish.

That is lucky, darn you. Darn you like old socks!

Where do you get your inspiration?

I get mine from a smoothee machine which is connected to a tube that originates at a floating dimensional portal in the middle of my living room.

Does your setting have Magic Shops

This is how mine is; it has to be since I don't have a DMG. For anyone who doesn't know: while it's possible to play DND with just the SRD it is MUCH easier to have the books.

    The Studious Accord

I'd like to chime in with a couple: Fir Mothoth: "Treatise on the Relevance of Ancestry to Arcane Ability" Tobias Greer: "Edition 1 Report of Previously Unknown Functional Alchemical Ingredients" these ok?

Why is Min/Maxing viewed as bad?

This is it right here. There's so many parts of the game that to not focus on one or two makes characters quite unlikely to succeed; again, IMXP I agree. Thank you for the quick reply.

    Post your favorite mood music...

For my game anything instrumental that evokes a mood. Which mood doesn't matter, as long as it evokes one; we'll find a use for it. Nothing published, though. I run for a bunch of musicians, so they make the soundtrack for the game. And their characters. And some NPCS. And the occasional item.

When have you hijacked a plot and made it your own?

When have I hijacked a plot and made it my own? Pretty much every time I ran a game. Sometimes I only realize it after the fact.

A Lecture on the Birth of Universes

I've a two-part question. First: May more than one Prime material plane exist at any given time. and second: If so, would it be supposable that more than one plane may 'share' one or more parts? For example: suppose more than one Prime material exists. each would consist of Ethereal...

Why is Min/Maxing viewed as bad?

Alright, before I begin the tirade, I'd like to clarify what I am understanding min/maxing to be: minimizing one's capabilities in one area in order to be able to maximize one's abilities in another. 'Area' in this case means either combat, socializing, spellcasting; things like that. Why the...

Rating Classes by Ease of Play

I feel like a retard in not having thought of making a thread like this when I started my game o' noobs. Coulda' used it. D'Oh. Anyway, I don't really have anything useful to add beyond what's already been posted, so I'll just congradulate myself on successfully wasting the time of all who read...

What's so special about this huge gemstone anyways?

Like the hand and eye of Vecna, it is one of a set of those of Zuoken, a deity outlined in the XPH. Nothing new about this idea, really, but the fist made me think of Zuoken. It could be made to hold taut the ephemereal 'strings' on a gate to a lost reality; should the hand ever be opened or...
