Outfitting a Monster: CR, HD, or ECL?

I generally use the CR but sometimes add in an extra campaign-related bonus. I would, of course, include the cost of any traps used in the defence of said monsters pad.

    The Most Powerful Item

As a player = +5 Dancing Longsword of Life-Stealing (1e) As a DM = Hmm. I've handed out a few artifacts recently (Philosopher's Stone [sold without investigation], Deck of Many Things [used then sold], Talisman of Reluctant Wishes [quest item - handed over to employer without investigation])...

Which prestige classes do you use?

As DM - none. I decided at the beginning of my 3.5 campaign that I was not going to allow them. I had basically moved the world from my 1e campaign forward in time and wanted to keep the same feel (as far as possible). PrCs didn't fit that. Also, I knew that some of the players would hunt...

Classy Way to Ask For An Explanation?

Sounds like the old roll the dice and roll them again if you don't like the result, sometimes known as 'cocked dice'. It happens sometimes - dice are cocked, one falls on the floor = reroll or call of 'take it!' before trying to find it. I have one player who used to do a practice roll before...

Extradimensional Spaces within Extradimensional Spaces? Always dangerous or not?

Don't see a problem putting a Decanter of Endless Water in a Portable Hole (I assume it continuously creates water, rather than drawing it from somewhere else) but, definitely, anything that is/contains an intra/interdimensional space going inside any other i/id space = BOOOOOOM!

Perennial campaign worlds vs. one-shot campaign worlds

In the old days we tended to have a series of adventures in which we'd kind of mix-n-match characters - I'd run a game for the party, then one of them would run something for the party now including my character, etc. The problem came with one particular player who, when he DM'd, would go hell...

I just learned the Psionic rules, and I have questions.

I would have thought that, if an NPC was in fear for his life he would use whatever power he had to beat off his attackers/escape. He wouldn't think "I'll only use half my power as there could be another party along this afternoon". Likewise, he wouldn't just fire off half his points/spells...

    Tiny Creatures in Opponents Square

A stirge, when grappling, loses its Dex bonus to AC. I would have thought that a tiny monster occupying the same square as a PC might get some cover, but I don't know of any written rule about it.

    Is Mind Poison a Poison?

If they are immune to all poisons, like an 11th level monk, yes. Sometimes, magical/supernatural poisons are excepted from immunity. Or is that just diseases? Would have thought so. Again, would have thought so. I guess the main question to ask is 'Is Mind Poison really any different to the...

    Search vs. Spot

In a similar vein, a Rogue uses Search to find traps. Suppose a party is moving down a 10' wide corridor. The rogue wants to check for traps as he goes. Using Search he would take 2 rounds per 5' travelled (asume the party don't want to go single file). Pretty damn slow. My idea was to either...

    The Opposite of Railroading...

I am guilty of often setting the PCs on a railroad (you've got to start somewhere), but I do let them off at the stations along the way. Sometimes, they decide not to complete the journey. Every time they step off the train they do something I never considered. Players, huh?

    The Alignment Game

Definitely not TN, then. Keeping one's word requires getting off the fence. He's more like Palladium's Aberrant. He has his own code and he sticks to it. Much more difficult in D&D. Lawful 'cos he keeps his word but Chaotic 'cos he does his own thing. Good 'cos he doesn't kill innocents, Evil...

    XP and PCs gaining Templates

A lvl 1 half-dragon fighter is a 4th level character, with a minimum of 6000XP, so he needs a total of 10000XP to get to 5th level (2nd level fighter). I assume that the rest of the party would be 4th level as well. If not I'd consider starting him at 0XP and make him work to buy off the...

    Beauty and the D&D Geek!

People hate what they don't understand. Many people will not be able to understand Role-Playing (heck, my wife, who is one of the smartest women I've met, doesn't understand it and she tried a few times) so they denegrate it and those who participate. Same as some Role-Players do with...

Experienced DM needs more experience...give me your ideas!

I understand your problem and the advice given above is good. One thing I would add; it seems to me that it is your players who need the experience, not you. They seem typical Roll-Players, not interested in anything but exercising their weapon/spell arms. Even the one who wants Role-Playing...

Experiences with Psionics in 3rd (and 3.5) Edition

Don't think about using 3e psionics. Go for 3.5 (Expanded Psi Handbook). Even then, I agree with PlaneSailing that psionics can give you significantly more bang for your XP than Sorc/Wiz. I am a GM with a PsyWar and a Psion in the party and they are powerful characters. The Psy Warrior can suck...

    Help a roll-player role-play!

Remember that Role-Playing isn't some mystical power that you are born with - it is just acting. You don't have to be a great actor to be a great DM. Sure, it helps, but you don't have to have polished characterisations of every NPC you create. Some of them really are dull and uninteresting. My...

    A Lawful Theft

Why would a Lawful God allow access to Chaos spells?

    Rate this Race!

For me I'd say +1 is OK, though the see-saw ability bonuses/penalties is more than I would normally like (+4/-4 doesn't necessarily mean Balanced), but the above line is a sticking point. Do you mean that they know everything their ancestors knew? That would be a huge bonus.
