    Have I spoiled my PCs?

Nice solution and, no, you're not spoiling the players. If they get into situations they should (by the rules) be able to handle and they fail it is probably due to either: unlucky dice rolls (not much you can do about it and them whining about it doesn't help) or rubbish tactics (not much you...

    Classic D&D...

I played/DMed White Box for 4 years, AD&D 1e for 23 years and 3.5 for 4 (didn't do too much 2e, maybe a year or so, but I didn't see it as much of an improvement) and hanker after the simplicity of the old days. I didn't particularly like THAC0 as looking the roll up on a table/doing the math...

DM game management tools- help getting my mojo back

I use DMGenie which, though it only contains OG material and has a few wrinkles, makes the job of GMing so much easier. I don't know if I would have had the patience to run a game without it, certainly not for 8 players & 3 cohorts.

    Stupidest things PCs/DMs have done

Hmm, lemme see...... 3.5 Nightfang Spire; bit of a ruck with some shadows and shadowmastiffs. The party had not taken the time to fully check out a hallway before opening doors and out came hte undead. The Ranger (archer deathmachine) moved toward a shadowmastiff and went clean through the...

Why does the paladin multiclassing rule exist?

There shouldn't be any stigma to being a Rogue/Paladin (one of my favourite gestalt flavours) as 'backstab' doesn't exist and 'sneak attack' is misleading. 'Precise Strike' seems a more Paladinly descriptor.

    3 Years of Unearthed Arcana

Used Gestalt for a small party (3 players in WLD - were we mad? Probably) but the DM is now having second thoughts as the party has grown to a fairly regular 5-7. Very nice idea, though, even using only Core classes. A twinkbook gestalt could get VERY silly indeed. I tried Reputation but really...

Worst/Funniest Character Names of all time

I had a 1e Ranger called Araldite, son of Armalite and a Gnome Illusionist called Bundleby. Also, I had a character in a sci-fi game called Genevieve d'Arreau, nickname 'Poison'.

Why are Lycanthropes less virulent now?

Rent a British film called Dog Soldiers.

    Time Keeping In-Game

Using DMGenie, I keep track of the days/months/years as well as the rounds of combat but I tend to fudge the stuff inbetween.

Immovable rod in sword hilt? You have to read

Makes more sense to me to put the glue on the blade.

    Amulet of resurrection

Well, if I interpret the table in DMG correctly: Unlimited charges, plus spell material cost. Resurrection = 7x13x2000 + 10000x100 = 1182000GP Limited uses per day = 682000GP True Resurrection = 9x17x2000 + 25000x100 = 2806000GP Limited uses per day = 1556000GP This makes no allowance for the...

    Help!!! Player Problems

Never assume that player is using unseen rules correctly. In my experience they only read the bits they like and conveniently omit the bits that don't help their 'mutant ninja of death' character build. This will also happen with Core rules that they 'apparantly' didn't read all the way...

Help me roleplay a "3" Wisdom

I'd go for hyperactive puppy. Attention span measured in seconds unless something is REALLY FUN, when it becomes super-absorbing. Ask the magic user "Why are you waving your arms about like that?" every time he/she casts a spell. Shout "Me, me, me! Cast something on me!" Always volunteer for...

My First "Evil" Campaign - Plotline Suggestions?

Who says that Evil characters can't be heroes? Granted, the ones in my campaign aren't exactly heroic but an LE character could easily do something good, on purpose, because it is the right thing to do in the circumstances, e.g., an LE priest curing peasants of disease - they are all potential...

    "g.p. weight"

Have your coins as heavy as you want them to be. Seems silly to me to make a poor peasant carry 1lb in his pouch for 10 copper pieces but, if you want your coins to be huge lumps of metal that is entirely your decision. IMC 50 coins = 1lb.

Yep. I'm allergic to every cat I've ever met.

The shift in gaming as we get older

I think it's a fair comment that, as I've got older, I have become less satisfied with mission/downtime/mission/downtime/repeat campaigns, even though that is exactly what my own campaign has been of late (because I have not been able to come up with a decent plot arc, yet!). Then again, I have...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

Let me think.... No and yes. I think that 'magic shops' of some sort are a reasonable product of crafting feats. Mages who are a bit tired of blasting monsters can sit down for a month or two, knock out 60kGp of items and sell them to people who do want to go duffing up monsters. Makes sense...

Color spray (or, for the Brits, colour spray)

For me the important word is 'spray'. It implies that the spell is cast in a direction rather than in an area. Then again, in your typical fantasy realm there is plenty of shiny stuff for the spray of colours to reflect into the eyes of someone facing away from the caster so maybe that doesn't...
