The VCH list (Very Common Houserules)

$ = in my campaign, & = generally in our group (I think) Disabled to - Level, Dead at - (CON + Level +1). & Dodge = +1AC to everyone. $ Sorcerers get Eschew Materials as a bonus. $ If a player doesn't like the HP they roll the DM will roll for them but they must take my roll.& Diplomacy is an...

Is it ok to hate cats and still be a gamer?

I find it interesting that people who like cats think people who don't like cats are deviants or at least mentally and/or emotionally deficient. Personally, I don't have a problem with most animals (besides the aforementioned eyeball blisters); it's the ignorant/lazy owners who annoy me and who...

    "g.p. weight"

Didn't play 2e much but I remember how heavy coins were in 1e. We decided to weigh some £1 (1 GBP) coins and came to the conclusion that 50 to a pound (lb) was about right and have used it ever since.

Is it ok to hate cats and still be a gamer?

Cats are evil manipulative creatures, only interested in themselves and their evil schemes. Let's face it, Blofeld wasn't the head of Spectre, his cat was. And I am fiercely allergic to them (we are talking eyeball blisters, here). Don't actually hate them, just keep out of their way as I don't...

Why is Power Attack stength based?

Have a Precision Strike feat with Weapon Finesse as a pre-requisite, perhaps allowing a maximum attack penalty/damage bonus of DEX bonus, rather than BAB. Otherwise, it is just a way to get big damage without applying big force.

Illusionist with a hostage, what would you do?

Assume it is an illusion and leave the room.

So how much does WotC get out of you per year?

Pretty much nothing from me now that I have stopped buying Star Wars minis (briefly lusted after the ships but my restraint-fu was strong). I have all the books I need and have pdfs of most of the others.

Would blending rangers and barbarians fix what is wrong with barbarians?

Never considered Barbarian broken. A bit 1 dimensional (like Clooney's Batman with emotion), but not actually broken. Isn't Conan a strong thief?

an odd idea on how to revise magic classes for a low magic setting

Not sure I'd be bothered to create new tables to solve this. Perhaps, I'd say that you could only take a caster level every other level. Basically force magical multiclassing.

    Castle Defenses

I'm with Tonguez on this. If someone wants an impregnable fortress you won't be able to see it or, at least, recognise it for what it is. That said, castles are always popular with a certain class of 'nobility' and anyone who can afford to build one can certainly afford the magic to bolster its...

    House rules disagreement?

Don't like it for general use certainly, however, if a caster can't actually see where he wants to centre his Fireball (say, there are a couple of enemies in front of the fighters and the wiz in the third rank wants to get the enemies but not his companions) he makes an INT check against a DC...

How did you get your start

Wow, difficult to remember that far back.... My best friend, who was a year older than me (13, rather than 12) asked if I'd like to try a new game (White Box, late 1975). I said yes and a couple of days later I had rolled up my first characters. Continued for 5 years through D&D & Traveller...

    Slightly modifying crafting time

I don't think it is a bad idea, though I wouldn't change crafting time in my campaign. I think we've only had 1 character make anything and she's now been traded in for a younger model so it probably won't happen again for a while. The only change I have made is that potions are made in...

    Not flat-footed in round 1

I am so going to steal that for my fumble table. Muwahahahaha! Did I say that out loud? :heh:

    How do you Dispel?

My players generally spend a few rounds buffing if they know they are in imminent danger of a fight. Likewise, if my NPC spellchuckers know that their defences have been breached, they will buff what they can, round by round, until the solids hit the extractor.

    How do you Dispel?

By 'all the other spells' I meant one at a time not all together. Bad choice of words, sorry. The problem with targeting specific spells is that, in general, you don't know what spells are running on an opponent. Sure, you might be able to see a Fire Shield, or he might be obviously Hasted or...

    House rules disagreement?

Your houserule is basically how we played it in the old (1e) days and, as such, I am cool with the idea. Don't think I would be bothered enough to use it myself but, if a DM wants a houserule, it is his game and it is my choice whether or not to play in it. We have had a few occasions when...
