Why don't more people play high level campaigns? 13th+

I have run a 3.5 campaign for about 3 years now (approx. 20 sessions per year x 6 to 7 hours per session = about 400 hours of play) and the party has gone from 1st to 12th/13th, with a few deaths and character changes along the way. It is getting hard to dream up things for them to do; they can...

    Fighters? Nah

Take away the 'Fighter level x' and replace it with 'BAB +x', then everyone can take fighter feats.

Power Attack when needing natural 20

PCs retreating? Does that actually happen? Agreed that Power Attack when needing 20 can't hurt, but it doesn't feel right.

What Makes DnD Fun For You?

Fourthed, though I also agree with nute and darklone.

If I critical hit on a natural 18 but need a 19 to hit do I still hit?

No worries, Nail. I don't always remember the rules correctly, though certainly more often than some of my players. I don't expect everyone to like my ideas. Heck, my players don't always like them but they play by them, which is good enough for me. (Hmm, there isn't a 'smug' smiley)

If I critical hit on a natural 18 but need a 19 to hit do I still hit?

If you critical a non-criticalable (I think I may have invented a word) creature a weapon's special property still fires so I would accept it happening on a double 'need 20' hit. I can appreciate the possible demoralising effect of not being able to critical a super-hard foe but there is also...

Trying again: What would it take to get _you_ to use core only?

Amendment: I run Core Only, partly because I use DMGenie and it only includes OGL stuff, but partly because I didn't want anyone to feel left out if they didn't have easy access to the same books as others. If someone offered to DM a 'use what books you like game' I would jump at the chance.

    Cleave on an AoO?

Actually, we thought it was cool and a good use of feats as well. It also seemed so silly that we agreed not to do it again.

If I critical hit on a natural 18 but need a 19 to hit do I still hit?

Understood, but when did not being RAW stop houserules? I believe that if you only hit your foe because 'you always hit on a 20' you shouldn't expect to be able to critical. There's Luck and there's LUCK. Maybe I'm influenced by AD&D when, if your THAC was higher than you could roll, you...

Trying again: What would it take to get _you_ to use core only?

I DM Core Only but few of the players have any other books so it has never been a problem. Might be nice to experiment with some of the twinkbooks but not a loss if I don't. I just like playing.

Where PCs buy & sell magic items

IMC the party can find minor stuff (potions, low-level scrolls, etc.) pretty much everywhere, from small temples, Kitchen Alchemists and jobbing spellchuckers. Anything else, they need to get themselves to a large town/city with a decent sized temple or a chapter of the Society of Mages, Sages...

    Cleave on an AoO?

In our group we simply houseruled no Cleaving on AoOs. Had a situation where the big fighter stepped into a load of tiny constructs and took them all out in THEIR turn.

Paladin's mount can't wear armor? What am I missing?

Don't see why horses should need to be proficient in armour to wear it. It's not like they are expected to wave a shield around, just carry a more extensive, somewhat harder saddle blanket. Granted, they would need to trained, using up a trick, to move normally while barded, but that should be...

If I critical hit on a natural 18 but need a 19 to hit do I still hit?

Similar question arose in my game. My ruling was that if you needed more than 20 to hit, i.e., "Needing to roll a 20", you couldn't critical. Ditto, if you have to roll 19 to hit and your threat range is 18-20: Roll 18 and you miss. Do not threaten, do not critical, do not collect £200.

    Linking CHA and Beauty

Back in AD&D days (we don't place too much importance on Appearance in 3.5, possibly because we are in our forties) we used APP = CHA+1d6-1d6.

Ever had a player in your group throw a tantrum or worse? Most uncomfortable moment?

Not exactly a tantrum (no anger and we were all laughing) but: Playing World's Largest Dungeon I lost my character (my fault, forgot to move out of Ogre's reach before trying to shoot it). Luckily, I had a backup all ready to go so I joined in the back of the same fight. Got stuck in, all the...

Ever had a player in your group throw a tantrum or worse? Most uncomfortable moment?

Strangely, my shouter is the most religious in our group. He's an out and out munchkin, misreading rules or forgetting the bits he doesn't like. Stingy (XP and treasure) DM as well, though pretty imaginative. Thing is, he is an excellent Sci-Fi GM and we've all known him, and each other, for...

Ever had a player in your group throw a tantrum or worse? Most uncomfortable moment?

Generally, we are a pretty reasonable group but we do occasionally have 'differences of opinion'. Most of the time they are discussed and sorted out but we have one player who has nearly caused me to shut my laptop up and go home (I was the GM). We had just had a death in the party, early in...

    Reincarnation and ECL/racial hit dice

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about the psi-hobbit. Also, the unfortunate player who has now lost 2 characters to death effects: 1 Slay Living and 1 being negative levelled to death by an undead nasty who surprised him from a wall then beat his initiative. Good times.

    Identifying Magic Items

I use a Knowledge: Arcane check against a DC dependant upon the power of item to get a hint about the item. Otherwise, Bardic Knowledge, Identify spell or paying 100Gp to an NPC spellchucker would do the trick. Don't see a problem with PCs using items the precise use of which is unknown. Can...
