    The Justicar

LOL Justishear! justiciar - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary I too had the same idea when I first read the Justiciar, but have yet to see someone take it. Thus, no need to nerf it yet. I do agree with Stalker0 that having to stay adjacent is a good mitigating factor...

    "Toss Me"

Hmmm, I'd just make it a Strength check (Str bonus + 1/2 lvl), and the higher the check the further you could throw someone. I'd probably make it a standard action too. I'm not sure what the DC would be though...

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

@ Rughat: I give them hints at what could be. I'll describe any features and what they can reasonably expect from a character's point of view. I leave difficulty a secret, though once again I'll drop hints like "it looks tough, even for you, to roll that boulder." Sometimes I'll tell them...

    Rules Lawyers Are Funny.

That makes sense Zephrin (to me at least). The DM is using a lot less of the player's system to run his monsters now, so there are fewer expectations of what a monster is capable of - when the PCs have expectations and a monster then surprises them the sense of "WTF that's not how it works" is...

    Playtest: Primal Power

Had not thought about Instinctive Actions covering for the summon's lack of OAs. Neat! Does anyone feel the wolverine is the weakest of the 1st level bunch?

brash strike - too good or simply good?

I like this point. Our battles are already pretty lengthy so I don't see much harm in letting the fighter do more damage to speed things up a little. FWT(1h) is Fighter Weapon Talent - one-handed weapons.

brash strike - too good or simply good?

The dwarf fighter IMC uses this, and it's awesome to be sure - 1d10 + 19 at lvl 11 w/Power Attack, Dwarven Weapon Training & +3 stout craghammer, or something? Pretty sure that's it. He has a 20 Str & Con so he's already pretty built for the power. :uhoh: Guilty (after the dwarf spent a few...

    Swordmage too weak?

The mark definitely seems weak, but you have to use the "cowardly paladin" tactic to get it to function well, IMHO. After you've marked a target move away and lay in to someone else. Try to make chasing you a lose-lose scenario if at all possible, so that the monster provokes OAs or whatever...

    Swordmage too weak?

Been playing a stormsoul genasi assaultmage with lots of lightning/thunder powers from 3rd to 6th and I'm quite happy. I have the highest AC in the party - the warforged fighter is 1 behind me. My two at-wills target Ref and Fort which helps when the dice roll low (I can have a bad streak from...

    Playtest: Primal Power

Druid summoning has tons of flavor! They're definitely the most interesting summoning powers previewed so far. For those without DDI subscriptions, druid summons have an Instinctive Action that they will perform if you don't give them a command. For instance, the Pack Wolf will bite an...

    Confused about holy symbols

I never even picked up on this during all my time with the PHB - I've been making my players hold their holy symbols. I guess I'll have to go back and re-read a few things... if this is true I know a paladin who is going to be very happy!

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

Here are some pics of the map I used for my sewer encounter. The PCs began the encounter on the catwalk by the broken bridge, ready to exit the area but yet to cross. Two Heralds of Tiamat are persuing the PCs, an adult black dragon and an adult green. The black surfaced right next to the PCs...

    DM Tips: Tracking damage

Initiative tracking is done on a big white board by the players. When a monster is damaged the closest person grabs the dry erase marker and writes the damage down next to the monster's spot on the initiative track. Same thing with bloodied, statuses, etc.

Level 3 PCs vs. Level 8 Monster?

If you de-level the ogre down to 5th and make him an elite/solo with a few extra quirks you're going to have a pretty good, memorable encounter IMO. If you just take the stock 8th level ogre skirmisher, depending on the sway of the fight, it might just devolve into a slugfest. He'll use his...

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

I have yet to erase it! I'll see what I can do about getting a picture uploaded this evening. That's damn sweet! The PDF pushes it over the top. I've yet to really build an encounter where the enemy has ___ walk and the majority of the terrain is ___. I've had lots of encounters with plenty...

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

Most recently, the PCs fought (another!) pair of dragons in an old sewer. Since they were facing two solos I filled the sewer with things they could use to their advantage. They were just leaving the area when the dragons attacked, so the PCs sent their NPCs running ahead while they covered...

    Demogorgon: Lame or Awesome?

Demogorgon is pure awesome. I like the MM2 cover, for what it's worth. It reminds me of a lot of the art Paizo used in their APs - Ben Wootten and Warren Mahy mostly. It's definitely... bright! Matches a lot of the other 4e art, which is very colorful.
