    D&D 5E (2014) [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

No. Tossing Glabbacat is easy but you can't defend yourself as well. You take [roll0] bludgeoning as your knees crash into unseen rocks.

    D&D 5E (2014) [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Orsik takes [roll0] bludgeoning damage. Remind me...Which boat was the damaged one at the start? I thought it was boat 3 but SunGold mentioned a few posts back that hers is the damaged one. Through this rapid, Boat 1 took 8 damage and boat 3 took 11.

    D&D 5E (2014) [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Surana sees the next giant wave slam into her boat and she loses control. It smashes hard on a large boulder below the surface, scraping its hull. [roll0] bludgeoning damage. Everyone one on it pitches hard but no one falls off. Ezraen and Sarith each manage to keep their boats on course to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swimming in Armor

It's not a penalty. It's logical. Clanky can swim really well and then covers himself in steel plates so it gets a little harder. Swifty can swim proficiently and covers himself in something less dense. The result is they then swim about equally. That makes sense to me. Clanky's greater...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swimming in Armor

I don't see how it is punishing Sir Swifty. It's keeping them equal. Let's assume both characters are proficient in athletics and a +3 bonus. Sir Swifty has a 12 str. So he gets +4 and Clanky gets a +9. I call for a DC 10 swim check. If you go with my original suggestion (min DC is the AC...

    D&D 5E (2014) [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Orsik and Derendil are both able to grab hold of the rope before going under and manage bounce off the rocks without injury. Sarith will make a piloting check to try to keep the keelboat on course: piloting [roll0] Erevan can make a check to try to grab the line or to try to grab Glabagool...

    D&D 5E (2014) [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Erevan, Glabbagool, Orsik and Derendil go into the water. Surana can see a third wave coming up. Erevan's boat is without a pilot. Sarith moves to take control of it. Topsy tosses a rope toward Orsik and Erevan. The bottom of the tunnel is rocky. Sometimes you can get a foothold to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swimming in Armor

I think this nails my thinking on it. Water should be a hazard that is meaningful but it should be simple to adjudicate. Characters who used Str as a dump stat will have trouble no matter what. Characters that wear lots of armor will have trouble too. I think the simplest thing is just use...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swimming in Armor

Like I said, it's not a simulation. If people want it to be a simulation they can make more detailed rules. Just like when you are paralyzed, your AC still includes your dex bonus. A more simulationist approach would include rules for not including dex in some circumstances and not including...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swimming in Armor

A couple of points: 1) Whatever else is being carried/worn can be discarded before drowning. Armor, not so much. Remember...D&D (especially 5e) is not a simulation. Certainly if you want you can make the rules more detailed, but for my part, I like quick, simple rules that cover most...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swimming in Armor

You could use my rule plus armors with stealth disadvantage impose swim disadvantage. Makes it pretty hard. Swimming in a tsunami...you're swimming in a tsunami...no matter what it's really really hard.

    D&D 5E (2014) Swimming in Armor

If you don't have a swim speed, melee attacks are at disadvantage. Edit: See what happens when I'm watching Stanley cup hockey and reading EN world at the same time...missed that "with a swim speed..." clause.

    D&D 5E (2014) Swimming in Armor

I'm about to have this issue in my PbP game...two NPCs just fell out of the boat they are on. I'm leaning toward just making the minimum DC for any swim checks be the AC of any armor worn. So if I call for a DC 12 athletics check to swim in some current but the character is wearing chain mail...

    D&D 5E (2014) [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Oh.. JustinCase should probably make one for Glabbagol, too (but at advantage since it's a cat and has four legs and claws)

    D&D 5E (2014) [OOC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Okay. Thanks for the clarification. Then I'll treat him more like the luggage than a character. If luggage goes over we'll make a check to see if he was properly secured.

    D&D 5E (2014) [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

The current takes hold of your boats. Suran and Ezraen are able to maintain control but Erevan isn't. His boat slams into the wall and takes [roll0] bludgeoning damage. It makes a scraping noise and you hear planks cracking. Bits go splintering off. He finally regains control when a sudden...

D&D 5E (2014) Making Wilderness adventures more interesting

Actually, now that I look at it, I think I have seen it before (or something like it) and was partially inspired by it. To determine the number of encounters I used 2d4+4 and spread them out however I felt like over the three legs.

D&D 5E (2014) Making Wilderness adventures more interesting

I have not but I'll check it out. I was thinking this could also apply to some non-travel situations. For instance, I served in an infantry company in Iraq. For about 8 months we lived in a small "Joint Security Station". It was basically three houses surrounded by a low wall and watch...

D&D 5E (2014) Making Wilderness adventures more interesting

That's what I'm doing. I chose some encounters randomly from the OotA random encounters table. I chose some from it and I chose some from some other sources. Some encounters play on each other and some play on the places the party needs to rest. My OotA players, please don't read the spoiler...
