    D&D 5E (2014) [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

As you come into what remains of Sloobludop, there are few signs of life. The fishing net "walls" are mostly washed away or buried by rubble. A few huts outside the village still stand by most of the ones inside have been toppled. You do spot a few kuo-toa lingering about, but when they see...

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

Yep. And what the OP seems to be looking for is some concrete (crunchy rules) either in the published adventures or in the rules as a whole that give the players a reason from a mechanical/crunch pov to push on and to ensure the DM provides a series of encounters rather than just one or two...

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

CapnZapp Idea for you. You've complained (and I've agreed) about the lack of uses of gold between adventures. WotC camebout with a UA that addressed this somewhat. Do you use it or give your players some othe meaningful downtime choices? This will require some work but what if you...

    D&D 5E (2014) [OOC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

I agree. In my mind, "random" encounters should have some sort of purpose. Introducing hooks or plot twists, consequences for poor decisions, flavor or adding tension. I do prefer some randomness to things (makes me feel like I'm watching the story unfold too) but three weeks worth of "and...

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

Not speaking for the OP here (and I agree with you...this approach would work for my game) but some people look at D&D as a strategy game (at least in part). The DM presents a challenge and adjudicates the rules and the players use everything available to their PCs to overcome the challenge...

    D&D 5E (2014) [OOC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Just to clarify a little: by the book would call for well over 100 random encounter checks. I don't think I'm going to do that... I think I will come up with a different way to narrate an interesting story with building tension and meaningful choices along the way. Angry DM had a good...

D&D 5E (2014) Long or short rests? What is better?

I think the answers in this thread prove that balancing the game around short rests or long rests is an impossible taks for the designers. They have givenn us a variety of tools to sipport various styles of play. As DMs it is our job to provide a variety of challenges for our players to...

    D&D 5E (2014) [OOC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Haha. Looks lke I can get here from Tapatalk again. So hopefully I can resume a btter post ng pace. What are your thoughts on playing the travel to Gracklstugh? By the book like from Velkenvelve to Sloobludop? Narrative style to get past the boring bits and advance the story? Either...

The Toughest Part of Dungeon Mastering........well to me at least.

I tend to go with the way LMoP starts. The party is together and already agreed to an initial hook and something exciting happens to kick things off...Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a good example. Where did Short Round come from? Who cares? Figure that out later. Right now Dr...

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

You could implement a house rule that resting is in real time. So if the party takes a short rest you pull out your phone and stop paying attention to them for a while. If they take a long rest "Okay. See you all tomorrow! " Sent from my SCH-I535 using EN World mobile app

And the NPCs get scrying and teleportation and the like as well. The game gets harder to both run and play at high levels. This is true. My table group is 12th level and playing through the Ravenloft portion of Curse of Strahd. They quckly figured out the Warlock can just cast Fly and they...

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

The adventure gives you instructions on how to us the many NPCs the party has available to foreshadow the drow pursuit at the beginning and then if the drow get close later the party starts encountering their scouts to push the party along. The group I am DMing has eluded the drow pursuit but...

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

I can't say I've ever run a game where monsters are aware of the party and just let them short rest in the dungeon. Some dungeons are conducive to that. Tomb of Horrors, for instance. But an active monster lair or base of some sort? No. The PCs are expected to leave to rest if the...

    D&D 5E (2014) [OOC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Your plan was originally Neverlight Grove then Blingdenstone. Then Buppido betrayed you and Sarith declared he is going to Gracklstugh to kill Buppido and you started leaning that way. Gracklstugh is a good place to buy weapons and get information about trade with the surface.

    D&D 5E (2014) [OOC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Haha. That's a good idea. But don't take the feat just to save Glabbagool. There is a plan in my head. I don't remember where I heard this rule (adventurer's league, maybe?): You can use the PHB and one other source. So if SCAG is your source, go for it...do I have that one? Hmmm...that...

    D&D 5E (2014) [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

Shushar is walking in circles (something he does when he's nervous). "Huh? Oh. Yes. I can get you to Gracklstugh. We best get some boats and get moving. Eventually my brethren will return and I don't expect they'll treat us as well as last time." So you are heading back into the village...

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

No, it doesn't mention rests specifically but it does mention that if the party spends too much time in one place the drow gain on the party. It also says if the party is travelling at a slow pace the drow gain on them. Certainly if the party is resting too much they will not get very far.
