I don't think you need a check to determine creature type. If it looks like you, it's humanoid. If it's really tall, it's a giant. If it looks like it belongs in Rl'yeh waiting until the stars are aligned, it's an abberation. You shouldn't let him pick and choose what he knows, though.

The core books suggest treating a 20 as a 30 and a 1 as a -10, that could help.

The reason there isn't a flaw like that is because my 1st level fighter can take that and get a FREE FEAT.
