WotC_PeterS: Class Names| NEW: Rouse-ist parts of PHB

I think the my favorite term for a fighting type class I've ever seen was "Bravo." However, that's probably rather too evocative for D&D. I think the core classes are supposed to have generic names. So, fighter is actually spot on in my book. Probably not what my character would say if you...

D&D 3.x 4E Death & Dying in 3.5 - How does this interact with Fast Healing & Regen??

Interesting problem. I would strongly suspect that fast healing/regen will not work the same way in 4E. I seem to recall that the stat card for a troll showed up, and it was pretty different. So, I'd guess it's just not something they designed for.

    Class Granularity

I'd be pretty glad with fewer base classes and differentiation done with selection of talents, paragon paths, etc. Like Druid and Paladin would probably be Paragon Paths. Monk would most likely be an optional base class.

D&D 4E What will your first 4E campaign look like?

The game starts in a society approximately equal to that of europe in the 1600s - there is some banking and musketry, but no steam-trains. There are great universities where arcane magic and natural philosophy are debated, and complex political maneuvers involving the church, the nobility, the...

    Ice Archon

Well, people are made out of meat, but you could probably still beat someone to death with a side of beef, after all. So, I suppose out-colding an ice elemental isn't too outlandish. You would think they'd be extra-resistant to it, though, or something. Really, it's the kind of thing I'd just...

Core Rulebook Gift Set Discounted on Amazon!

I tend to think that a good gaming store does a lot to keep geek culture alive. It cross-pollinates the CCG people, the comics people, and the RPG people. Some of those Pokemon kids might grow up to play D&D if they're exposed to it. That's the problem with so many rpg sales being done over...

Game rules are not the physics of the game world

I tend to prefer the interpretation that hit points are how the world works. So, no, a high-level fighter can't die by falling off a horse, in my game. As an interesting aside, if the aged Baron who slew dragons in his youth were to be found in the forest with a broken neck after his steed...

    What about skills ?

Here's a thought...what if we have fewer skill choices to make? Say you want to play a rogue. That's a bunch of skills. The idea in 4E is that you can sit down, gin up a character, and jump in. And that there will not be as many choices, and certainly fewer choices that make your character...

    D&D 4E DM Fiat Supreme in 4e

This is sort of tangential to the thread, but stay with me. I think one of the things that most initiated my knee-jerk FIAT reflex was Mearls talking about social encounters. Essentially, there are rules for resolving them, but the GM sets up what success and failure mean. I wasn't too fond...

Newest Biggie Smalls report is up

Strange. This guy's writing style I just cannot get used to. And I really like the Confessions series by Mazzanoble, which apparently annoys the hell out of a lot of people. Different strokes, I guess.

Do the PCs ever die in these playtest reports?

We don't have a rogue. We have a Barbarian, a pacifist cleric, a barbarian/pacifist cleric (with some headbangingly stupid things done with alternate class features that I won't get into), some kind of half-assed custom gish played by a guy who would be awesome if he'd been playing D&D long...

Do the PCs ever die in these playtest reports?

I'm almost sure that one of the earlier ones had some PC death. I know I read about how they usually just say the character is alive again and roll on. Seriously, though, once or twice every twelve combats is probably too often for PCs to die. So, it could still be a substantial risk and not...

    Pit Fiend Defenses Explained

I think it's a coincidence. There isn't going to be a formula like what you're looking for - there's a formula based on its level and role, though, if WotC hasn't drastically misled us all.

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Iconic Character Dead?

Monkey once took the stitches out where they'd removed his appendix, because he didn't like the way it had been sewn and was worried he wouldn't like the scar. "It was kind of pooching out" he said. He also informed us that his intestine didn't feel like he thought it would.

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Iconic Character Dead?

...was his name Monkey? I used to know a guy like that.

D&D 4E Something for the grognards to like about 4E!

It is kind of odd. It looks like they're planning for the heroic tier to be three modules "wide." Then you're in the paragon tier. So, maybe the first 3 "sets" of H1-3, P1-3, and E1-3 will be related. After that, they could get a little more ambitious and do more hardcore themed adventure...

    The Vorpal blade

That's...pretty close to what I was implying, I think. It has to both be expensive and work rarely, which isn't a great combination. And then when it does go off and kack out a solo dragon on the first round, it has rather the opposite problem.

    The Vorpal blade

Hmm. I could see it existing, you'd just have to make it sick hard to actually get somebody's head off. You'd have to crit, make a successful follow-up attack roll against a different defense for some spiffy additional effect, then follow that up with an attack at a third defense for the...

Core Races to Sport Muppet Voices

I felt bad for the gnome. He said he was a monster, but...the dude just apparently lives in his hole in the ground with a much-put-upon badger sidekick. The message of this video is that PCs are the real monsters. :( Mostly kidding. Seriously though, with all the accusations of...
