    Excerpt: The Warlord

The sample characters would seem to falsify that idea. Sadly, IMHO, because I don't see INT doing as much as I'd like it to.

Monsters are more than their stats

Better yet. The King is an ancient graybeard, but his wife is young, beautiful, and has her hooks deep into him. She's corrupting him and getting him to implement villainous policies. But she's not the bad guy! It's her personal fashion consultant, the fabio-esque Incubus who is pulling her...

Monsters are more than their stats

If I am, seriously, expected to put on my DM hat and simply fiat all the out of combat abilities of the monsters, I will turn around and not buy the game. I would consider it so incomplete as to be a failed RPG. I can deal with really ill-defined abilities in an RPG that has a generic...

    D&D 4E Sandbox game: should I 4e?

Ah, sadly, no. I somehow got the impression it was going to be run online. Sorry to trouble you.

    D&D 4E Sandbox game: should I 4e?

Umm, sort of OT, but if you do go for a sandbox-style 4E game, would you be willing to take on another player? I'm really into that playstyle, and it's very rarely done. Thanks for considering it, either way.

Will different core settings be geared toward a particular "tier" of play?

I too will chime in on the Kult-love. I'm already working on a D&D setting where the big problem is the disappearance of the demiurge.

Will different core settings be geared toward a particular "tier" of play?

Ah. I haven't really kept up with any of that stuff these days. How'd they go out?

Will different core settings be geared toward a particular "tier" of play?

No, I agree with him. Krynn's god's need slapped down. I would totally run a paladin 1-30 in DL with the goal of killing off their supposedly LG patriarch god, as justice for all the innocent children slaughtered when he dropped a mountain on that city. Balls to the wall, dude, and let...

D&D 4E 4E Vampiric Pit Fiend Lord (using new templates)

That is sick, but I think I like the lich one a little better. Being able to spam out more minions seems just disgustingly dangerous to me. I think I could mess a party up with that, in all honesty.

    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

Well, this discussion has convinced me of two things. One, I'm going to get rid of magical plusses in my game, most likely. I really dislike the feel that instead of being something "extra," they're a crutch that the PCs have to have because they're not as awesome as the NPCs and Monsters...

    Each Stats Schtick

STR may also influence encumbrance. This can be non-trivial. There's few things more delightful than my PCs delving into an old-school dungeon and then realizing they don't have the raw carrying capacity to haul back their loot. Logistics for the win, yo. Seriously, though, I do hope INT...

    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

Y'know, this is a tempest in a teapot. I'd rather have a D&D standard for how vampires spawn, since it's the sort of thing I might not realize isn't in there until it comes up. So, I might not have an answer prepared. Seriously, could some WotC guy just tell us whether the info is in there...

Scrying - Does it have to be a problem spell?

I don't really view it as a problem, it's just part of the setting. People scry on each other. Countermeasures get developed, which are hopefully imperfect.

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

Excellent question. I'd say a good answer is that there's rampant corruption and intimidation in the police force. The bad guys have access to those same spells. When the families of their brother cops start to suffer, and they're betrayed by other cops on the take (who they had trusted!) and...

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

Depends on what you mean by plot. Do you mean something overarching going on? Yeah, of course, who wouldn't want that? Or do you mean something more like a course of action which the PCs must follow? Because that's what I'm talking about, and that's what a LOT of people mean when they say...

Are you going to buy an EXTRA copy of the PHB?

I generally find that a second PHB is indispensable if I am trying to convert new people to the hobby. Experienced players can damned well get their own...but if I'm trying to talk a couple people into trying this whole D&D thing? Absolutely. So, I'll probably invest in an extra one for that...

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

I know I potentially have a different reading of how to run alignment than most people do, but...well, I wouldn't consider the average Murder She Wrote perp to be a good candidate for Detect Evil. That said, the idea of Angela Lansbury as some kind of Paladin/Master Inquisitor is delightful.

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

This is my favorite. Not only did the murderer kill the mayor, he turned him into a ghoul. So, you can't use your little tricks on him, but he's also eaten the household staff.

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

You're right about the tone, that's my bad. I have been a part of too many games ruined by this attitude, and I've got some leftover bitterness, I suppose. I ended up leading the rest of the PCs in what I refer to as the "Great Plot Rebellion," and...well, one less bad GM in the world, because...

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

See, I'm willing to roll with that, and simply make it a known part of the setting. High-level people are godawful scary. That stick-thin Wizard, the one who looks like he's never worked a day in his life? Well, he's gone to other worlds, contended with devils, and cast world-altering magics...
