    D&D 5E (2014) Buffing the Champion Fighter

You know, i think a big part of why Remarkable Athlete feels so...disappointing for most is that grappling and shoving uses *skill proficiencies*. If grappling and shoving was an unmodified ability check, like initiative, then that bonus would suddenly feel *incredible*. (Plus, this would make...

D&D 5E (2014) Chase scene: Ending turn on jump

I get you. If you wanted to spend two rounds crossing a bridge, you could have an action on one side and an action on the other, if you wanted to cross the bridge in one turn, you'd have to spend one round dashing. But, you can walk across a bridge as slow as you like, and it won't drop you...

D&D 5E (2014) Chase scene: Ending turn on jump

No problem, it doesn't feel like you are picking on me, and considering how to answer caused me to consider how to clarify my ruling. Thank you. You want to jump a 45 foot gap. You have a maximum jump distance of 45 feet, and a movement speed of 30 feet. The way I see it, If you don't take...

D&D 5E (2014) Chase scene: Ending turn on jump

No. You can't end your turn in midair. You can jump as far as your movement will allow. If you want to jump further than that, you can take the Dash action. Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

I'd be happy to share what worked for me! So, the Oracle room really serves two key purposes in the adventure: It informs the characters of the situation at Maelstrom that led to the breaking of the Ordning, and it directs the players to the Evil Giant Lords who are directly sowing chaos in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

That works. In my case, the player of the half-orc barbarian had her own copy of Sword Coast Adventure Guide, and she was really keen on the characterization of the Uthgardt that you find in there, but the characterization the Uthgardt get in Storm King's Daughters seems a lot different? So I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

OH RIGHT, the giant relics. The barbarian is also an Uthgardt herself (she took the Uthgardt Tribe Member background from SCAG), so when I was first looking at the adventure to prep, I cut the whole 'loot the Uthgardt holy sites' quest.

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

I think it makes more sense to run it before confronting Iymrith. I haven't done the math, but if you ran more of the pre-Malestrom chapters than you need to, you could likely get enough XP to hit 11th level. And then, if you run through Against the Giants, and then circle back to fight...

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

(Gosh, I've been meaning to post in this thread for ages, we wrapped 'act 1' of a planned three a short while ago and I wanted to update y'all on how it went and what we did.) I started the adventure in Triboar, the night before Highharvestide. We ended on the 14th of Marpenoth, sixteen...

    D&D 5E (2014) Buffing the Champion Fighter

I've only really noticed Champion's being frustrating to play in games where there aren't enough total combat encounters to let the extra crit chance shine through. If anything, buff the champion by giving them more non-combat abilities. Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use all of the P.C. races and classes from the PHB?

My 'default' is "All races in the player's handbook, except for gnomes and halflings"

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use passive insight?

I'm...not entirely sure what you are asking me here, but i'm happy to answer your question as soon as i know what it is. Could you be a little more specific? or just rephrase it? i might just be parsing it poorly.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use passive insight?

Without rolling against the players, I it frequently to improvise an answer to a question that has no DC. An example would be, a player asks me if their character knows anything about the ruined keep they just spotted on the horizon, and rather than just have them roll a check, i'll look at...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use passive insight?

Yeah. i use passive scores for every skill in the game, including insight, in various situations. It's incredibly useful for guiding my own fiats as a DM, and when you use advantage, disadvantage, and opposed active checks there's plenty of variety.

D&D 5E (2014) Homebrew campaigns based off of media?

I'm working on a 5th edition conversion of Shaftal, from Laurie Marks' Elemental Logic series, but its in the early stages of development. It's a fantastic setting for a game though: compelling premise, and simple enough to grasp even if you aren't familiar with the source material.

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, what are the most baffling and/or pointless questions your players ask?

I mean, they have a passive insight, and I'm not stingy with information about impressions NPCs give off, but they still ask. So what I've done instead, is rule that active insight checks are discernible events. Other NPCs will notice and sometimes comment upon the suspicious glances, the...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Explores Downtime Activities

I LOVE the foils and complications rules. I do find it a bit odd that the Investigation skill isn't relevant to Research, and that Gaming Set proficiencies aren't relevant to Gambling. Though i do like the "make these three different checks and total up your successes" resolution mechanic...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, what are the most baffling and/or pointless questions your players ask?

"can I roll an insight check?" This won't follow a particularly suspicious statement made by an NPC. This won't even follow a complete statement made by an NPC. This won't be made by the person interacting with an NPC, and will frequently interrupt another player who is interacting with the...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Starter Spells; Plus UA Returning To Monthly & Sage Advice Returning

I could see it being awkward at some tables, but it could cute and narratively satisfying at others. The Eve of the Final Battle "if not now, when?" marriage is a solid trope, and a plausible development for party members who were romantically involved during a campaign. It would only be awkward...
