Volo's Guide AL Rules - You can play them all!

I have to agree. As a DM, I'm happy to have some guidance for me and my players as far as to what is, and isn't, a setting appropriate direction for a character. (I am all too often posed with a request for guidance in that regard by my players! The Forgotten Realms is an overwhelming big...

Volo's Guide AL Rules - You can play them all!

I like this a lot. I was a little worried about how all these new races were going to mesh with the AL experience, and this is the perfect way to do it. Still, it saddens me to learn the the Kingdom of Many Arrows is officially no more. The orcs of the north deserve peace.

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

The initiative round is a game state: the narrative slows down, and everyone's actions are tracked with much greater degree of precision. The initiative round is usually concurrent with the beginning and end of combat, but you can use initiative time to resolve anything that requires such...

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I am not arguing that this rule is hard to interpret. I am arguing that accidentally adding a brand new rules construct to the game (which this does, by way of referencing a concept that doesn't exist) when you are not thinking about the rules set as a whole, just...

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

Right, but 'a fight' isn't defined as a unit of gameplay within the ruleset. This is rule design critique. You and I both know what they are getting at with 'once per combat', and can both actively interpret the rule into a table ruling that matches the intent, but that doesn't mean that the...

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

It's okay, the concerns that I (and others) have raised about the wording can easily be read as trifling over semantics. I'll try to explain better. The issue isn't that I'm envisioning use of the Surprise Attack ability in a situation that you wouldn't consider to be 'combat', or even that I...

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

What are they going to do about the still-evil races? Same thing they did with the Drow and the Duergar, I figure. This isn't the first time that 'evil races' have been offered as a player race option in 5th editon's history.

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

I mean, I get that what they were going for was a direct translation of the monster stat block. Something that approaches appropriate abilities for player characters, while preserving as many of the Monster Manual features as possible. I am disappointed in that decision. I understand why it...

D&D 5E (2014) Dragonborn reproduction - eggs or live young?

The Player's Handbook dragonborn race is its own species; they are entirely separate from the 3rd edition Dragonborn of Bahamut, which were the product of a ritual that transformed other humanoids. Player's Handbook dragonborn definitely hatch from eggs, like reptiles. Also of note, as of...

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

Also, the Bugbear's Surprise Attack refers to a limit of "once per combat" which is the first time that a rule has referred to a "combat" as an explicit unit of gameplay? I understand what they are going for, but I don't like the implication of making an explicit distinction between "combat"...

The 10 Player Races in Volo's Guide Revealed

They brought back racial stat penalties. They brought back racial stat penalties? I have to say, I am incredibly disappointed that they did this. Three foot tall, forty pound gnomes don't have racial stat penalties.

D&D 5E (2014) What official material is considered problematic to the point where it is not balanced and presents a problem?

What official material have I found problematic? The Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. And I don't mean "this cantrip is too OP" or "this subclass is useless and underpowered" or "these mechanics are ambiguously worded" What I mean is, I'm hard pressed to point to any of the mechanical...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mounted Combat

A warhorse is just a horse that has been trained to follow your orders under stress, and not panic at the sight of blood or the sounds of battle. It's not trained to like, discern friend from foe, and kick monsters at your command. If you dismount, they'll try to stick around, and defend...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mounted Combat

I don't think that is how the purchasable animals in the Player's Handbook equipment section are supposed to work. Could you explain how you came to that ruling?

    D&D 5E (2014) Mounted Combat

I recently had a player hit Paladin 5. She and I spent a few days trying to figure out how exactly this spell was supposed to work, and JC's tweets just made the spell more ambiguous. That said, we got to a ruling that feels good to both of us. Here's how I'm running the steed: The steed is...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Dex save doing?

I feel like this is only a problem when using Grid Play. Grid-less play, being more concerned with relative positioning than exact positions, can easily accommodate small changes in fictional positioning that make sense for the circumstances at hand.

Does Your Group Allow Homebrew or 3PP Material for D&D Games?

That IS strange. I don't even allow all the official stuff. SCAG is taken for granted at most 5th edition tables I've seen outside AL, but I don't play with it. I own it; I use the setting details when running games in Faerun, and I'll sometimes suggest a background out of it when it suits...

Quick Clarification on valid Paladin Steeds.

Thank you for the prompt response! As a follow up question, does this mean I can, for the purposes of AL, legally give a player permission to summon something not explicitly listed in the spell?
