    D&D 5E (2014) What character sheet do you use?

    I roll handdrawn sheets on graph or lined paper, and experiment with different layouts each time. The Wizards' sheets haven't really clicked with me, and i'm not a fan of PDF or spreadsheet set-ups, but I haven't found the perfect one yet.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spell -> Counterspell -> Counterspell (from same character that casts 1st spell) - possible?

    That's not just a good ruling, that's rules-as-written. the trigger for counterspell is "when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell" Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

    D&D 5E (2014) Spell -> Counterspell -> Counterspell (from same character that casts 1st spell) - possible?

    I let players cast counterspell in response to a counterspell of a spell they themselves are in the middle of casting. But only if they've got a hand free for the additional somatic components. If the original spell that the opponent is trying to counter has somatic components itself, you can't...

    D&D 5E (2014) What does it mean to you for a character/class to be "good in melee"?

    Defenses have been mentioned before in this thread, but defenses go beyond 'high AC/high HP'. Most melee classes have something that helps with saving throws as well, and that's very important for front line resilience. Paladins have their Aura, Fighters have Indomitable, Barbarians have...

    Unearthed Arcana WotC's Mearls Presents A New XP System For 5E In August's Unearthed Arcana

    I'm a little baffled that this had to exist at all. If this gets more DMs handing out XP for things other than combat, I'm all for it, but - I don't know, did folk need permission to do that in the first place? Did folk not know how to hand out XP for exploration or interaction accomplishments...

    D&D 5E (2014) [poll] Barbarian Satisfaction Survey

    I love the barbarian. My berserker is 7th level now, and, I know it isn't a popular opinion but, I really like the berserker as written? Even with the exhaustion? The frenzy is incredibly powerful, and the barbarians core class features provide many sources of advantage to counteract the levels...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tell me about your tieflings

    This week I started a new campaign, as a DM, and during character creation I discovered that a player and I had very different assumptions about what tieflings were (origins, characteristics, aesthetic, status of their soul, etc.) We got on the same page eventually, but in doing so I read up on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Flight ability: Does this make the Aarakocra overpowered?

    Not in 5th edition. "Incapacitated" just means you can't take actions, bonus actions, and reactions. When Unconscious, you automatically fail dexterity saving throws, and attack rolls against you are made with advantage, but your AC (and the role dexterity plays in determining it, if any)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Flight ability: Does this make the Aarakocra overpowered?

    If an unconscious non-bird can still benefit from their dexterity modifier when calculating AC, then a conscious, hovering bird-person ought to be able to do so also. Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

    D&D 5E (2014) How much fighting do a typical D&D session have?

    One combat, or no combat, is by far the most common amount of fighting in a typical session of mine, with the very rare Two Fight Session showing up every once in a blue moon. I usually run four hour sessions, and I never spend more than two hours total on fighting. When a fight appears, it is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rules clarification query: Darkness (2nd lvl Spell) vs. Mantle of Flame (1st lvl Phoenix Sorcerer feature)

    "A creature with darkvision can’t see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can’t illuminate it...if any of this spell’s area overlaps with an area of light created by a spell of 2nd level or lower, the spell that created the light is dispelled." What am I missing?

    D&D 5E (2014) Rules clarification query: Darkness (2nd lvl Spell) vs. Mantle of Flame (1st lvl Phoenix Sorcerer feature)

    The darkness spell contains all of the relevant rules text. Non-magical light can't illuminate the darkness. Magical light that comes from a cantrip, 1st level spell, or 2nd level spell is dispelled by the darkness. Magical light from all other sources illuminates the darkness. If it comes...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rules clarification query: Darkness (2nd lvl Spell) vs. Mantle of Flame (1st lvl Phoenix Sorcerer feature)

    Well, looking at the description for darkness, there's one relevant point. Is the light source non-magical? I can see a case for either, but at my table I'd probably let both the assimar racial trait and the phoenix sorcerer class feature light up the darkness. Sent from my iPhone using EN World

    D&D 5E (2014) Which Homebrew Rules do you use? Fixes, styles of game, pillars, etc.

    I'm considering the impact of combining Investigation and Insight, personally. But Investigation definitely needs some help staying relevant. I chose insight because it's a popular pick at my table, and it's really only used for one thing. ("Is this NPC lying to me?")

    D&D 5E (2014) Which Homebrew Rules do you use? Fixes, styles of game, pillars, etc.

    I have players make defense rolls against a monster's passive attack score. Natural 20s give the player an opportunity attack. I've also changed shoving and grappling to be an active check on behalf of the players and a passive score on behalf of the monster. I'm toying with the idea of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

    Waterdeep could plausibly have a friendly cleric of that stature. What faith is the paladin? I don't have the whole city memorized, but I know Waterdeep does have big temples to Selune and Sune. Silverymoon is also big, established, and high magic enough to have a cleric of that level, but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you buy a 5E updated reprint of the First Forgotten Realms Box Set

    No, because I'm not mourning the Time of Troubles or the 3rd edition Realms. I liked the Spellplague for what it was, and I'm more than pleased with the Sundering as a setting for my now and future Realms games. If they publish any new Forgotten Realms stuff, it ought to be more about the...
