D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

The original point of this (albeit, deeply derailed) thread was talk about the rules-as-written, with the aim of ensuring a consistent play experience across multiple local game tables that are all running on the same organized play rules. That is how the invisibility spell works as written...

    D&D 5E (2014) Not dying?

I...I'm not sure I do, but I'm also not sure I fully understand your objection. Do you mind explaining further?

    D&D 5E (2014) Not dying?

Many players will find a game where they know they won't die not terribly compelling. I personally know many players who would find the "[almost omni-present] risk of individual death" to be incredibly stressful, and not conducive to having a good time. For the first camp (the players who would...

    D&D 5E (2014) Not dying?

I'm going to take it in good faith that you aren't trolling, and are simply curious as to how I could possibly create interesting challenges for my players with this as a starting premise for my game. Winning is not an eventuality, surviving is. This means players have to live with the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Not dying?

I do not kill a player's character without their explicit permission. This is something that make clear to players before we set out to play. I cannot abide the pace of survival-oriented play, and this encourages my players to play harder in combat. The fact that the players can fail a combat...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Short gargoyle with the invisibility spell cast on them and they are motionless long before the PCs arrive and there's no environmental factors to draw attention to their presence? Automatically hidden, I agree with you. The PCs don't have a chance to notice the gargoyle. That's still a...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

The invisibility spell in the Player's Handbook can't be cast on objects, only creatures. Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

And you can absolutely make that ruling, the rules empower you to do so. However, the topic of this thread is the rules-as-written. How you'd rule a situation isn't the RAW. I mean, you are literally describing situations where you'd do away with the RAW for detecting hidden creatures because...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

An invisible statue is an object, not a creature. Obviously it doesn't have to make dexterity (stealth) checks. It can't, as it lacks a dexterity score, owing to the fact that it is an object, not a creature. Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) What should a primordial be capable of? (spoilers for SKT)

There aren't really "standard magic items" anymore. All that stuff you could just buy in a market place before the Spellplague broke (about a hundred and twenty years ago from where SKT takes place!) and who knows how all the workarounds developed during the Spellplague are interacting with the...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Yes, but a DM who looks at the paralyzed Invisible Stalker and says "you know what, this creature is hidden, no chance of you noticing it, because it doesn't make sense for you to have a chance to notice it." That's a ruling to dispense with the usual stealth v perception rules because they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Poison Spray

It works well against enemies who don't have terribly good con saves. (obviously, c'mon Mira, better analysis) It shares the same advantage that all saving throw damage spells have in that, there's a lot of circumstances and situations that'll impose disadvantage on your spell attack rolls...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

You know the exact location of an invisible creature until said creature takes the Hide action and beats your passive perception. You can only make opportunity attacks against a creature that you can see. Sent from my iPhone using EN World

    D&D 5E (2014) Hiding mid-battle; surprise or not surprise?

Well, yes. But it still happens maximum once per creature per combat. I took OP's question to mean, "can a player re-impose surprise on a creature after that creature has already entered the fray and is actively participating combat?", and my answer is "absolutely not, under no circumstances".

    D&D 5E (2014) Hiding mid-battle; surprise or not surprise?

Right, but surprise is still a condition that only happens (if it happens at all) as a creature enters combat, from their perspective.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking on an ally's space

My first instinct was to say "yeah that's totally within the rules-as-written and i'd allow it" but consider that it also implies that every single orc the fighter is holding the door against will be able to move up and deliver its full compliment of attacks, so, i guess it's up to you and what...

Unearthed Arcana Your current use of Unearthed Arcana material

Currently I'm using the "players roll everything" rule in one of my games, and we're trying out the new downtime rules soon. Oh and my girlfriend is adding the Arcane Archer subclass and the new barbarian subclasses to the character options pool for a Zelda-themed game she's starting. That's...

D&D 5E (2014) DM query: Any interesting differences between different party sizes?

I: I consider three a 'small group' and six or more a 'large group'. II: Three is my ideal size, honestly. It's much easier for me to create dynamic and challenging encounters for the group, and the parties themselves each feel much more unique and varied. Four is lovely. Five is about...
