D&D General One Piece of Art VI (Maps)- What is Your Favorite D&D Map?

So many maps. I have several full-size prints hanging in my office that were already mentioned. But if I had space for another, it would be this one by Mike Schley: The Moonshae Isles was one of my favorite sandboxes within the Forgotten Realms, even though they weren't originally in...

D&D 5E (2014) The Beauty of D&D, Attitudes Towards Change, and a Letter from 1992

You can let someone else drive the bus and hope they take you where you want to go. But when you feel like you missed your stop, don't just sit there and be pulled away from your destination. Know when to say "that's far enough, let me off here." Only then can you begin making your own way, even...

D&D 4E Have you ever run 4e using just Essentials?

Working on the next phase of my personal project for running 4e games on Fantasy Grounds Unity. Despite the Essentials-style covers, these will include most magic items and treasures from all available sources.

D&D 5E (2014) What (if anything) do you find "wrong" with 5E?

All I can say is that 5e failed to gain my interest since it came out. So while I cannot pinpoint anything specific, I can honestly say that there is an underlying confluence of several factors that continue to push me towards every other system or edition.

D&D 4E Have you ever run 4e using just Essentials?

I agree. There's a lot that can be done within a good VTT without the need for everything to be written into the program. My concern, however, is new players and players without access to the game materials. Players still need to know what their options are and how things work. If I were able...

D&D 4E Have you ever run 4e using just Essentials?

Aside from everything that's already been discussed, I thought I would share some of the changes and additions I made for my Fantasy Grounds Essentials module. Keep in mind, I have particular goals and parameters that may be different than everyone else's. Here's a brief list: I want to create...

D&D 4E Have you ever run 4e using just Essentials?

@James Gasik That was a great story, and some very good first-hand experience. I appreciate you sharing it. I suspect this is all coming down to personal preferences, which I can get behind. So I might be better off waiting to ask my own players what they want to do when the time comes. Thanks...

D&D 4E Have you ever run 4e using just Essentials?

Yeah, me too. Agreed, though I don't know how many more were really needed. In Dragon 398, they compiled them all into an index by ritual type that was almost 15 pages long. But that included rituals from all sources, including the magazine so that might not be useful (or applicable)...

D&D 4E Have you ever run 4e using just Essentials?

I can accept that answer. Every time. Agreed. But they also had the goal of blending seamlessly with the core classes. So players have the option to play a simple fighter or the more complex version. Since I am removing that option, I wanted a compromise to make sure all classes had a little...

D&D 4E Have you ever run 4e using just Essentials?

That's not a bad idea. If nothing else, it saves me some extra work before I find out if players are interested in that option. Thanks! I have several sources for that, including my physical books. For anyone else, you can find it for free (and legal) in the official Errata updates for DMG and...

D&D General [Poll] Metagame justifications for in-character behavior

There is such a thing as "good metagaming" and "bad metagming". There's no point in articulating specific examples, however. What is acceptble to one person or group may be frowned upon by another. The only thing that really matters is the intent. A case of "that's what my character would do" is...

D&D 4E Have you ever run 4e using just Essentials?

@GreyLord Thanks for the feedback! That was very helpful. I appreciate it. I hear ya. But since I am creating a rules module for Fantasy Grounds, I decided to go all-in so I would only need to do this once. You're probably right. I don't believe doing so would upset the balance, but it may...

D&D 4E Have you ever run 4e using just Essentials?

Before I get into this topic, let me just say that I'm not here to spark a debate. This is not about how anyone feels about Essentials, now or then. I've been working quietly in my own corner for some time now, focusing on my own thing. But I am genuinely curious to hear if anyone has some...

D&D General Sandbox Campaigns should have a Default Action.

I've never encountered players sitting around doing nothing during a game. I've had players who just want to be part of the game group and will do whatever others tell them, or just wait for the action to start so they can take their "turn" during the key parts that interest them the most (i.e...
