The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

If it's viral, then it will likely morph into Donkey Kong pox. Don't get pixelated.

Revisions, changes, and new posts are made above this post. Please refrain from making posts or comments in this thread. There is an ongoing journal with a lot of information, but it is going to take me a long time to write it. If you like, I have created a separate discussion thread that you...

What lessons did you learn from other systems?

The Star Wars RPG (i.e. the Genesys/narrative dice system) from Fantasy Flight Games taught me a number of lessons. A system can be both easy and complex. In game design, the saying is "a foot deep and a mile wide". The core mechanic is so simple and easy to understand, and yet it takes real...

Thank you! It pleases me to hear when the time and effort I spent writing actually does some good for someone else. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Regional Variant Human - seeking feedback

I highly approve! In fact, drop the "Regional" and "Variant" descriptors, and make it the defaullt model for all human characters, then expand for all race options in FR campaigns.

Why would A Future King become A Adventurer?, and even if he did why be A Thief? and why would A Future King only have A Int of 11 and A Wis of 9?

There's an easier scenario for this. The man who is currently King, the father of this character, was not always a king. Before he was king, he might have experienced adventures of his own and romances with women in other places. So just because your character is the first born son of a king...

    D&D 4E A Discussion Thread for Jacob's 4e Redsign Journal (+)

I was familiar with the Dragon Age RPG where they first came up with the AGE system. I haven't seen it since, but I assume it generally works the same as it did then. The Stunt Die was originally referred to as the Dragon Die, for obvious reasons.

Cool. I'll eventually get deeper into the designs of a purely 3d6 system and how it deviates from the d20 norms. I hope you'll find it useful in your work, or at least intresting to read. 😉👍

    D&D 4E Jacob's 4e Redesign Journal

The Mechanics of 4th Edition When I talk about mechanics from other games, I don't just consider the ones obvious or related specifically to roleplaying games like D&D. That opens up a wide spectrum of mechanics and options that may not fit into the typical RPG system.

Better Mechanics for a Better Design We all know the d20 mechanic works. We know how it works, why it works, and all the pros and cons that go with it. But that doesn't mean we have to like it or hate it. We just accept it for what it is. If its doing the job well enough, then there's no reason...

Changing The Core Mechanic The twenty-sided die, or "d20", has been at the heart of the Dungeons & Dragons game since its inception. It is what is commonly referred to as the core mechanic, which defines the rules and parameters of how the players interact with the game system and create the...

D&D 4E Dissociating what I (we?) like from the mechanics

You cannot replace the d20 and expect everything else to just fall in line. Here's an example of what I had to consider when I decided to build around a 3d6 bell curve rolle as the core mechanic. At its most fundamental level, the original core mechanic of the game has you roll a single die...
