    D&D 5E (2014) PvP Class Comparisons

Good insights and reasonable questions. I don't think that anything that we have seen from D&DNext suggests that there is a clear "this class is the best/most dangerous". Note that smaller parties are always more vulnerable to charm/dominate than larger ones.

D&D 5E (2014) The Illusion of Experience Points that Everyone Disbelieves

I like your signature. But I cannot wrap my head around this. I would argue that "creating a shared fiction" is the default, unavoidable outcome. At the least it should be able to co-exist with a "score". Look at it this way: every game of RISK I ever played had a story - even if we quit early...

D&D 5E (2014) Options: Can we build them?

I do think the Character Builder was the bane of 4e expansion by 3rd parties. The output was so user friendly, that it made it hard to ignore. I am looking forward to playing 5e. It looks flexible enough and streamlined enough to be easily expanded. I hope the lawyers make it easy for 3rd...

    D&D 5E (2014) PvP Class Comparisons

To this day I vividly remember my first session with the group I joined in college - some of my best friends to this day. But that first session, we ran into some giants (this was AD&D). The Winged-folk Archer-Ranger downed a potion of speed, the Wizard cast Haste on him, and the Cleric cast...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rule of Three: 7 Feb. 2014

This is the only one I am going to comment on, but your chances of rolling more than 50 points of damage with 8d8 are ~1%. Eyeballing it (via anydice.com), I'd say that more than 90% of your rolls will be between 26-46. Not the best spell for this argument, as it is very situational and best...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illusion of Experience Points that Everyone Disbelieves

With the group I am currently playing with (3.5, playing through old Living Greyhawk mods), xp is very important, as different characters participate in each module, some lose levels, some make items, etc. . . The level of each character is very important, as the Average Party Level (APL)...

Legends & Lore: What Worked, What Didn't

I agree with this 100%. The difference between "I'll use this weapon because I get to do special maneuver x" is much more engaging, fun, and proactive, than "I need to use weapon y because weapon z is totally ineffective against this opponent." The second statement is reactive. I am not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does D&D Next need +2/-2 modifiers?

If they do add modifiers, I would hope they follow the advantage/disadvantage model: you either get one or the other, and the presence of any number of either cancel the other. Steer clear of adding/subtracting multiple modifiers and keep the game moving.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rule of Three: 7 Feb. 2014

It is noteworthy that you completely ignore the mythic and literary figures. Odd, since it is a pretty good bet that D&D was more heavily influenced by Conan and King Arthur than by any historical figure. Unless you are going to argue that Genghis Khan was a spell caster. . .

    D&D 5E (2014) Rule of Three: 7 Feb. 2014

Isn't it possible to view PC Fighters as more than "Humans in Metal" though? Shouldn't they be Heroes, and just as playable/powerful/capable-of-impacting-the game-world as the other PC classes? It would seem that D&DNext is trying to give them the tools and abilities to finally live up to what...

excellent idea - I, too have used poisons as plot devices in the past.

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Tiers of Play

From the perspective of giving advice and for the purpose of general discussion, the concept of tiers already exists. We (the gaming community) talk about low level (characters, campaigns, adventures, ...) and high level (characters, campaigns, adventures, ...). Now, what each of those vague...

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Tiers of Play

I don't think that is the intention, but "tiers" can serve as a convenient indicator of PC power relative to the rest of the game world. If 3rd lvl PCs are saving the world from demonic invasions, then that has rather far reaching implications in terms of the availability of higher level NPCs -...

My responses fell in line with the typical response to each and every question. Either I am sheep, or they are on point :)

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

regicide had it right on page 1. when you reduce the creature to zero and choose not to kill him, he is disarmed. The at-will/encounter/daily distribution is an attempt to regulate in-combat events by their significance and impact on the plot. The impact (especially on a PC) of being...

    Surging Flame vs Lasting Frost

They still have the trait "Resist Fire", it just happens to have a value of "0". It is the same as with Vulnerable 5, Resist 5 - the damage suffered by the creature does not change, but the creature still has both traits.

    Surging Flame vs Lasting Frost

The point of the last clause it that even if they numerically counteract each other, the creature continues to have both traits. As Victim pointed out, other powers and effects may still trigger off of those effects. As for Surging flame "sucking", Allow me to disagree - it is the next feat my...

    Excerpt: Economies [merged]

Cross - let's put this in game terms: let's say that it would take the characters a month to find a buyer for their precious magic item; how many encounters could they have had if they were out adventuring? certainly more than 10, which means they could have more raw wealth by doing what they...

    Excerpt: Economies [merged]

Buy a bottle of wine at a restaurant. Compare price to same bottle at a retail store (state/package store). Compare price to that offered if you purchase said bottle at the winery. I can tell you that in Pennsylvania: 1) If a local winery sells a bottle for $6, the Liquor store will have it...
