What do you consider a "railroading" module?

Railroading modules are those whose contents are hard or impossible to use easily without radically restricting or over-ruling player choice. If the contents of the module are still useful if the players make unexpected decisions, then the module is not railroading me. If the contents become...

NPCs based on real people (or how Diaglo got in my game!)

I used to do that. I've got to get back into that habit now that I have a group of players who have never met the people I can do really good impressions of.

A thing about d20 D&D I didn't like, and still don't know why it was done...

Don't forget the apex of the AD&D DMG: The Wandering Prostitutes Subtable.

    Making a Homebrew World...

The important thing is to strike a balance. You need certain things to stay un- or partly-defined because, in order to make something work in the part of the world your players are in will something will suddenly need to be true of a place way over on the other side of the map because of what...

Toronto Gaming Con - Pandemonium XXIV

Barsoomcore, if you think the con scene here is bad. Wait until you try going to an RPG shop.

A thing about d20 D&D I didn't like, and still don't know why it was done...

While we wait, can I ask: do you think there is there some return to the crazy thesaurus collage level titles contemplated in this scheme?

    Sacred cow monsters

Agreed. Wow man. Wow! I'll now have to build an adventure around it.

A thing about d20 D&D I didn't like, and still don't know why it was done...

I have read all three pages of this thread and I guess I'm still missing the piece of information I expected to see by post #3: what would be gained by returning to the 1E experience system of different quantities of XP for different classes? In what way would the game improve as a result of...

    Sacred cow monsters

I read the thread title too literally and expected to be told about exciting Axiomatic Ice Bison. :(

    Idea for a Fantasy Nation

Actually, that sounds like the Spanish Hapsburgs. That's what the conquistadors were. Pizarro, Cortes, Aguirre, de Soto and a host of less famous ones led small, multi-ethnic parties that were largely self-financed and operating at arm's length to the crown. The adventurers who obtained the...

Where's the "I live locally but will be in Egypt on that day" option?

What are the best classes to start a new player on?

I'm not too swift on the uptake when it comes to new rules so, when I rejoined D&D, my DM and I put some careful thought into the best class for me to take. Since then, I have shepherded quite a few players through the process of learning D&D. In my opinion, the best way to determine if a...

AC 56 at level 6! You too can do it!

Wow! This thread reminds me of just how much unbalancing crap has been published for D&D.

    Commuting to a game

The quality of the game and group varies directly with how long I am prepared to commute. Fore one of Teflon Billy's games, I travelled 4.5 hours each way. In a mediocre to bad campaign, 25 minutes is my upper limit.

    Duck Stats

Well, in the last episode of the D&D campaign in which I play, my character's familiar was reincarnated as a duck. Our group lacks duck stats. Can anybody direct me to stats for a mundane duck, ideally a mallard?

    Cool ideas for cities required

I strongly recommend you grab a copy of Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities from your local library or bookstore. It is dozens of 1-2 page descriptions of magical medieval cities. Here are some samples: http://www.des.emory.edu/mfp/calvino/callast.html...

Island-based Civilization Ideas - Need Help!

I would recommend that you make some use of the great classics of archipelago mythology; I'm thinking in paticular of The Odyssey and the Life of Saint Brendan the Voyager (not the short version, the long one).

Explain why DMPCs are bad to me.

Those would be the DMs I don't play with.

    A campaign I'm fed up with. . .

Wow! Once again, I find myself attacking a post of Kamikaze Midget's. Our gaming philosophies are clearly polar opposites. Engaging on passive-aggressive nonsense that simply increases the number of people having a bad time while offering nothing constructive? Screw that. I'm no fan of...

    Campaign World Problems/ Questions/ Considerations

Yes. What I would want out of a calendar is one that reflects the worldview of people in the game and the physics of the game world. Whether this results in a slightly different calendar or a radically different one is more a matter of the game world and its peoples; the calendar just flows from...
