How stellar was the old Fiend Folio!

Ah, I love FF! The monsters are truly weird... which is what monsters should be. I'm not a big fan of the fey, Greek and Norse mythic guys, etc. I'll take some of that Philippine mythology, some frog men, some off the wall critters, etc. instead. Weird, scary, deadly. Works for me.

    Darksun Teasers

    1. Gray text on white background: eyesore. 2. Tried 4E: think it sucks rocks. 3. Like original Dark Sun box but not 2nd box or PP books. 4. Had no problem with content of Baker's post.

Really, how important is the system/edition?

I think the "species" of a system is less important than its "genus", if you'll permit the expression. Generically, a rules-lite game differs from a rules-heavy game in the kind of play experience it delivers, and how much the particular style of the Ref influences that experience. Also, a...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder: Is it evidence that new editions don't need to be that different?

I probably should have avoided judging the Rent Model, since it's basically two separate issues: is the Rent Model the only possible model (I'm saying "no"), and is it actually a good model in and of itself (I also said "no", but only as an aside). However, to answer your reasonable request for...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder: Is it evidence that new editions don't need to be that different?

Part of it comes down to this: do you think that the best/only business model for an rpg publisher like WOTC is to keep re-selling new iterations of the rules over and over... to keep making the core audience re-buy what they've already bought several times before? That seems to drive some...

    WFRP3e: Dice mechanics

Credit where it's due: that doesn't suck.

DARK SUN - Most Used City?

I dunno... a "free" city still seems kind of hopeful to me. Which suggests more of a possible campaign goal than a default state. It would be interesting to see Tyr become a free city only to be laid waste because of that fact. Maybe the other sorcerer kings put aside their differences...

    WFRP3e: Dice mechanics

I think I'll redesign D&D to resolve all attacks and spells by playing a game of Twister. If the one who initiates the attack/spell wins, the move succeeds, otherwise it fails. It's totally stupid, but it's new and different so I'll be hailed as a pioneer of new gaming techniques and get all...

DARK SUN - Most Used City?

I don't really like the idea of a free city in Dark Sun because part of the point of Dark Sun is that the world never lets up, you never catch a break, it's just an unrelenting series of bloody trials until you die or rise to the top. Having the Mulshevik Revolution overthrow a sorcerer-king...

Are military armies valid in 4e?

Which means that most wars in a 4E world end with both armies starving to death because it takes so long to kill one another. Give me the days when a 4th level character was a "hero" and 1st level character was a "veteran" (elite trooper).

Are military armies valid in 4e?

Um. Might want to check that reading comprehension, there. I wasn't saying that FR was not around since 1E (I know that all too well, thank you). I said that Old School D&D does not presuppose a large number of wizards. There's no reason to think that, in a given D&D world, there won't be...

Are military armies valid in 4e?

Hold your horses, buddy! :) That may be a problem in Forgotten Realms and/or 3E, but Old School D&D does not presuppose or necessitate large numbers of wizards in the world, ruling the roost. The number of magic-users who can decimate an army may be only a handful, or two, or none at all.

    WFRP3e: Dice mechanics

My actual opinion is not fit for print, but let's just say "strongly negative".

What is Vancian magic and does DnD have it?

I'm not sure I get the concept of an "excuse" here. Cugel's casual evil ("evil", not "neutrality") is part of the world of the so-called "Dying Earth". There are very few (though there are a few) characters in DE that are actually good. Most everyone is a layabout, get over artist, liar, cheat...

Dire rats not as mean as previously presumed

How long 'till I can buy one at Petsmart (or is that Pestmart)? I want. His name will be Skaven.

Former WotC Customers, would resuming pdf sales bring you back?

I voted "Yes". I'd buy something just to reward them (a hardcopy something... dungeon tiles maybe; of course I'd buy PDFs too).

    Dungeon Editorial: Valley of Chaos?

I'm neither a 4E guy nor a DDI subscriber, but this is the opposite of what I want out of published material. The only sense in which my gaming has anything to do with "story" is that you could tell a story about the session if you wanted to. I much prefer simply to have sites / situations that...

    DARK SUN - Your Plans?

As far as my plans, I will actually take the book off the shelf at the retailer and flip through it. That probably doesn't sound like much, but it's a big step for me... I haven't even bothered looking at a WOTC book in quite some time. I don't know that I'd actually buy it... I'm still pretty...

"No rules referencing during play". Reasonable, or authoritarian?

"Authoritarian" is not necessarily the opposite of "reasonable". It partly depends on what system you're using. Using OD&D or B/X for example, a rules lookup might take 15 seconds. Using 3E where you've got multi-paragraph treatments and numerous hard-coded options... that could be a pain...

non switchers: what can wotc do to win you back?

I tried a 4E campaign... I just didn't like it. It does its thing, and that's not a thing I'm interested in. I already play real miniatures games (like Flames of War) so I get my fill of tactical minis combat. The PDF thing is the other issue. If they want to treat their current customers like...
